Here are the first attempts of an unskilled newbie, frigthened with all the texture copyright infringement mess all aroudn here recently, who still decided to try to turn free pictures into textures... I tried some distorsions and filters in order to ashieve something nice out of casual photos (such as vegetables, buildings and so on) of a now "not so worthless" collection of free-of-right pictures... Intend to make clothe textures for Mayadoll... Here are the first two tries, for Casual style (on the render). I intend to make bunch of others, and for various mayadoll clothes. Believe me the method is dumb and requires no talent or brain, but i remember a gift from a hungarian penpal and friend of mine. She once gave me a tshirt she made herself, using cloth ink and fold/nodes on the cloth during inking. Result was rather original and nice. I asked myself if I could use some kind of "similar" digital method to twist out a picture (or maybe a color, later) to achieve same kind of result. When you look again both the source/origin picture and the result, it is weird :)

pakled don't laugh, it is in fact a good technic (i mean fake body parts into clothes) espcialy when you havenothign else to do.. (or don't have markdc cloth converter.. damn 40$, half the price of a brand new poser artist... the software had to be a living miracle !) pakled if you want exempel of "painted" body part or body used as cloth, i made some (and have some in wip), watch "maya knight" and "mayalias" in my gallery, they both are... oh i forgot to tell, of course i intend the texures to be free once i get them correct and finished. after all i cannot make them commercial as i show them in this forum :)

They're looking very good Riddokun, I may even have a try at this myself. I'm always talking about doing my own textures but as yet it's still in the idea phase. 8) Catlin

hmm so far they are not uvmapped at all.. it is just plain pictures i forced upon cloth material. It would need to be shaped better, to fit the uvmapping of each clothes. that's why i realised some odd/strange thing about casual style top: watch the upperarms/shoulders.. the texture there is symmetrically mapped and distorded, and it was not intended. on different clothes so far it would have looked different. I guess it is because of the way casual style top is made. i face a dilemna: make plains square pictures one could use as he wants, but seams maybe visible depending on clothes, and without MAT files but one can put them on whatever they like, or try to work a bit more (intended) and adapt the textures on each clothes, andmake MAT files, but it will multiply the number of time a same texture is made, thus the file size of archive. well there are really good texturer artists there and sure you can be discouraged to even start your own ones compared to them. Don't ! you are not here to match out top merchangts, just try to do a texture that suits YOUR need first, and once you are satisfied with it, watch if you can improve or correct it a bit. Once they are satisfactory beyond your own need, share with others. Depending on what you do/want, if may be easy to make some good things. We don't always need top 3000x3000 textures all the time, sometimes top merchant can not look down on most lower needs of ours and not make something simple but yet needed; here is where you come in :) Also don't be ashamed, even if foer you the texture was simple to make, it is the idea that matter. At start, my strawberry collection was DUMB to make, in a painting point of view; any newbie (i am one) could make it in a couple of hour. What took me time was details, and fitting them to some different clothes, figthing againsts visible seams and so on; yet people seems to liek it (i saw many gallery pictures and even freebie products thumbnail .rsr files showing them)

here are the new two i made this morning... but just makign them is fast though fitting them in interesting ways on each clothes will be far more time consumming. here they are just the raw jpg textures, but i made them seamless (or i tried at least) so i can roll them a bit if i need to adjust a position. So colors and shap changes depending on whcih cloth they are used on. here we see the previous textures in a RMP dress for mayadoll, and the two new ones on casual style, tanktop and same dress... These are same texture, so you can see thatr from one uvmapping/cloth to another it changes alot :)

There's a site called Textures by Tuesday that has a lot of cloth textures and stuff..don't know how helpful it would be, but you could always stop by..thanks for the info, tho..;)

well why not but you forgot the url for the site.. anyway I was so fed up with all the copyright infringement mess ver here recently that i rather use free of rights materials rather than any "freebie" on websites if i can... you would be surprised to look at the "sourc epictures" of each textures i posted here :)

That's a great link pakled thank you. 8)

Riddokun ( ) posted Fri, 06 February 2004 at 5:31 PM

well this "three warning" childlike madness is becoming a total paranoia psychosis... it reminds me a volume/book of GTO... Personnally, i feel i won"'t even need 3 warnings to get banned from rosity and i may even leave this place faster than expected if things continue onwards like this.. i guess that today it is like that, tomorrow you'll get warning when you post wip in this forum, or warning if you POST in this forum unless you are "allowed" (maybe a paying service ?) to do, until membership too will cease to be free.. forget the warning, or ask about WHAT/why it was given exactly. else, it is not a warning, it is an arbitrary and blind punishement. I had a teacher at university who would never give us back our exam copies, nor making in class correction of the exams.. We could carry on all the year withotu knowing our faults and weakness, never learn from them and never got the opportunity to correct them... I don't think it is a proper or efficient way to "TEACH" anything to anyone... back on topic now... about the link you posted, what is the status of textures available there, regarding copyright ? free for all use ? personnal only, derivative work, else ?

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sat, 07 February 2004 at 5:21 AM

They are free for all use, but they would like a mention if you use them and if you host them on your web site to give a link back to their site. BTW, does this mean that we can no longer post wips in the forum? I would think if anything was Poser related it would be folk asking for advice on their work before posting to the gallery. Things get stranger here by the day. 8) Catlin

Riddokun ( ) posted Sat, 07 February 2004 at 11:15 AM

i don't really know what we are really allowed now, but i can guess an answer: as few /little as possible, and soon, nothing at all if possible ! :) as for free of uses textures, it rises an interesting point, i may show you why, in the things i am doing: i base my work on photos, but the source and the result looks so different, i can bet on anyone whoo would dare to say he could recognize the source after i slaugthered it to its last pixel :)

file_97161.jpg

here another sample.. so far the pack is made of 8 global seamless textures... depending on which cloth it is applied on, it will ahve different look, and if one need,as they are seamless, one can "roll" them on x and y axis and save them as new ones to get desired effect... but i don't know if i'll try to make arbitrary positions and mapping for most mayadoll clothes, along with mat files, or if i release the whole thing as is... not very user friendly but it could reach the shore sooner. what would you want/think about it ? (here are the 8 textures on various clothes)

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 11 February 2004 at 6:39 AM

I've seen others distribute bundles of seamless textures in freestuff and they aren't mapped. I think if they were free and unmapped that it wouldn't matter if they were mapped to specific items of clothing. Anyway a little work never hurt anyone and if they weren't mapped then just think of the variations a person could come up with. 8) Catlin

Riddokun ( ) posted Wed, 11 February 2004 at 10:23 AM

I am checking if making specific cloth mapped versiosn and alternates is viable in regard of file size, number of MAT files and work it takes... I am still uncertain on how i will release them :( and meanwhile i ask myself this, I may also make more and more... would never see the end of this...
