Subject: V3 eyebrow transmap instead of painted

this is so weird. This is my first question. I used a texture map that didn't seem to have any painted on eyebrows, yet when I render it this is how it looks. I did it in poser 5 - no bump maps in the rendering supposedly. Love esther PS I applied the same head texture to the head an scalp. There's not a different face texture on the brows or anything. The only parts I haven't applied the head texture to are the eye balls themselves and the inside of the mouth. Guess there must be some microscopic texture for eyebrow on the original head texture map???

It looks like it is just shadow placement since the actual eyesocket is still there .. You might try some different lighting to see if that reduces the effect

Okay, now I want to apply an eyebrow transparency map. I thought hoping that the original painted on eyebrow look wouldn't get in the way too much would be my only problem. How wrong was I! I turned the eyebrows gone dial to zero. Little dotty pattern appeared indicating that a transmap was going to be applied to the eyebrows - good I thought, but when I rendered, horrible fat eyebrows. Yet eyelashes done in a very similar way look fine. This is odd. I checked my materials settings, made sure my settings for eyebrows and eyelashes were similar - no help. so then I searched the forums. Someone said make the brows same colour as the face, so I changed the diffuse colour, no help. So then I tried diffuse colour as black, and then as white, still no luck.

That one looks like a transmap isn't applied

But I rendered it without shadows.

Yep but they still are there naturally unless you have a global light situation .. The shadows you turned off are the cast shadows .. the ones that exist in the scene right now are just the absence of a light source shining on it

I am not that familiar with P5 (well at all) but the transparancy map (as I am reading it) is reading all white which means that nothing will be transparant. Black is transparant and white will show up with grey being in the middle depending on the darkness of it. I don't know how to fix it in P5 though. Sorry

Here is what should show on your node, the transmap. I scatched the map so it could not be copied, but you get the drift. Click where I marked red and you can find the trans you want to use.

Get rid of the head map. V3 doesn't use it like how V2 uses the eyebrow and upper eyebrow. You can match the brow color to what hair color your going to use. One main reason I like transmap brows.

You need to get rid of one of the nodes. Both will work so just toast one and make sure it is pluged into the transparency. You don,t need anything pluged into the Diffuse Color. Use that to match your brow with your hair color.

estherau ( ) posted Sun, 08 February 2004 at 2:26 AM

The transparency one plugged in without the other one just doesn't work - I still have fat eyebrows. I'm about to try the image map now plugged into the transparency plug as you suggest.

Okay - it's solved! I believed you when you said either of those methods should work and I tried loading it as an image map, and it worked, then when I changed the image it stopped working and there was just a white area below the node, so then i deleted the node and made a new one with my texture and it worked, so therefore all along my problem was a buggy thing of poser 5 not really adding the transparency. anyway I'm happy because my v3 now has eyelashes. thank heavens! Thanks so much - I never would have solved this without your help. Love esther ps they look to me not quite as good as painted ones but not too bad.

You can change the color or the trans and use it as a texture too. You still need the real trans connected. The reason the white one didn't work, you forgot to change the map like you did with the other node. Glad you got it working.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Sun, 08 February 2004 at 4:56 AM

That should be "change the color of the trans." Time to go to bed.

estherau ( ) posted Sun, 08 February 2004 at 5:01 AM

Actually though there's some sort of bug I really think. I had just one node connected and it worked until I changed one transmap for another and then I couldn't even see the picture of the transmap at the bottom of the node just a white square like the one in one of my messages above on a disconnected node. If I take that node away and make a completely new node the picture comes back again. Love esther

Very strange. Well, at lest you know how to fix now. Have fun.

diolma ( ) posted Sun, 08 February 2004 at 7:31 AM

One possibility for this problem could be Poser's cache system. I discovered thi annoying little "feature" when I was try to generate a texture-map for a prop. I did a quick 1st draft for the map with my paint program, loaded the tex oto the prop and renedered, just to check how I was doing. I then switched back to my paint program, made some alterations to the map, swithced back to Poser and re-applied the map. Nothing changed. After several attempts, it dawned on me: the file name hadn't changed, so Poser took one look at it and thought "I've already got that one loaded, I don't ned to load it again". DOH! Only way I've found to get over that, (Other than to save each modification to a new file, rather than updating an existing file) is to close down Poser then restart it. I don't know if this applies in your case, if not I apologise for a rather long-winded explanation. Cheers, Diolma

KarenJ ( ) posted Sun, 08 February 2004 at 7:54 AM

Diolma, in P5 at least, the picture doesn't change on preview, but if you render, it does update. (I found this out after eating huge chunks of my hard drive up with 30 .psd files call tex_1, tex_2, etc. Ouch)

OK Karen, I understand:-)) However the above can still happen (even after a render) as I found out, unless there's a way to force Poser to re-load a file it thinks it's already got (if there is, I'd love to know what it is - it can be a pain having to restart poser every few minutes). Cheers, Diolma
