THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: *** EMERCENCY! need HELP! My File won't open!

cobalt ( ) posted Fri, 15 September 2000 at 12:15 AM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 8:38 PM

I've got a Bryce4 file that's nearly 30 megs in size. I've been slowly building it over the course of a mont now... I did a test render earlier and everythin was fine. Just now I went to open it and do some more work on it and it won't open. It gets to 60% and gives me an "object not found" error.... The last change I made to it before saving was adding the trashcan object from the renderosity bryce freestuff objects area. It imported and textured just fine - I haven't moved it or anything so I don't know if that's even the problem. I've got to get this file back! Is there any way to get into the file's code and fix what's wrong with it?

according to windows, I'm running version "4, 0, 0, 13" I remember running an updater on it, but I don't know which one. Has more than one been released for Bryce4?

Try re-naming the Bryce File make sure it has the .br4 extension and then opening it, or open Bryce up then file>open it, if all that doesn't work, throw away your preferences file from the Bryce folder, if that doesn't work you have moved or adjusted something that isn't there, save your objects to your create palette as often as you can, that way if something like this happens you can grab and plop em in real quick.

Do atleast one thing a day that scares the hell outta ya!!

Also if you group lights to a complex scene, that will happen, it has always been a bug that was never fixed. You will get that error message.

hi cobalt that is indeed a bug that was never fixed until 4.01... I lost A LOT of work to that little error...and clay answered your question as to the cause with the above post. its easy to reproduce, easy to work around...but a pain when you encounter it...especially when you have a lot of work invested in the image. condolences for your loss (its probably lost forever) I have a whole write-up about this error at my site in the "bugs" section. Dang. :/ All that work down the freakin' tubes...... Oh well, I have most of the model in component form, due to the way I work. And I still have the obj files I created in raydream, so I guess I'm gonna just have to start over and rebuild with what I have. Sucks tho. Thanx for the info on what went wrong.

Just a suggestion- When working on a Bryce project, it's a good idea every time you save the file to save it under a new name, ie SceneA, then after doing some more work save as SceneB, then next time SceneC, etc. That way if you ever run into this nasty situation you can go back to your previous saved version and get most of your work back. That saved my butt a few times when my Bryce 3D files became corrupted when doing fine tuning in the AML. Everything seemed OK until I tried to open the file later and I couldn't. -jake

If you number the file like Bryce1 and then do a save as, Bryce will automatically save the next one as Bryce2. That's what I do. Has saved me from disaster many times. Sarah

Well the same thing happened to me with a file that was 108mb. But this file loaded all the way then said unexpected error. What bull crap. And can someone tell me why some figures that I export out of poser won't work in bryce. I export as a obj and it loads all the way in bryce. But after it finished converting it says invalid file format. Can someone please tell me what this is.

KrzyAce-the reason some poser figures wont import into bryce is usually because they have a 3ds prop attached to them, it works for some figures and doesnt for others, thats a Poser bug that screws up the translation/conversion of 3ds to obj. Ken
