If you could indicate what part of the instruction manual you are having difficulty with we may be able to help you better. Also you may find the tutorials on my site helpful.

Generally parenting the clothing prop to the figure's hip is best. It has no effect on how the cloth will move. It just enables you to move the figure and clothing to another part of the scene if required.

The clothes could be falling off for a number of reasons

  • Is the clothing positioned to not intersect the figure when at the zero pose?
  • Have you selected to drape from zero pose?
  • In the cloth room have you set the clothing to collide with the figure?

Would it be possible for you to post a couple of screen shots so we may see what is happening?

You usually parent the cloth to the hip, unless it is a cloth like a scarf or a top. I would parent the scarf to the head and the top to the chest.

Are you creating a simulation in the Cloth Room?

As phil says, the dynamic cloth doesn`t work automatically. There is a tutorial at the link that shows you how to do it, and I would advise you to read PhilC`s tutorials for some more information, too.
