I'd like to take this opportunity to bid a sad farewell to my flatbed scanner. It was a good scanner, scanning as only a scanner can scan, but its time was up and it died in mid scan, valiantly attempting to scan a photograph of intricate complexity. I tried desparately to save it, but it was too late and so, I was forced to pull its usb, tearfully watching its light fade into darkness forever. I would ask those of you who have lost scanners to bow your heads in a moment of silence as I chuck it into the garbage.

Your first?.... My sympathies dear Richard.... I'm on my third flatbed.... Hope you didn't pay too much for it I usually go through a flat bed every 1 years.... Now may be the time to invest in a film scanner...

Ah yes, I have already optained 3 price quotes on a new scanner. Problem is, I have medium and large format negatives and slides to consider. A high end flatbed scanner can scan these for me but do lack in quality. Decisions decisions. Thank you for the note of sympathy. Yes, Prima was my first, cheap, er, I mean good scanner. Ah well. time to uncork a bottle of wine and consider the options.

Mmmm..... I like my film scanner very much, does 35mm and slides, but it does not do the medium and large format films... Misha is using a Nikon model that works with the larger formats..... although I think it was quite pricey.... Hey Misha which model is it that you have again?

Let us take a moment of silence for the poor deceased scanner... Now, think about the new one that will take its place! =) I know nothing about scanners, so I will just be on my way to wandering the halls. :P Kim

I twisted my arm into springing for the Nikon 8000ED. Scans are beautiful, but machine has annoying quirks, not least of which is plastic parts that go "sprong!" For just occasional 120 film, think I'd now get a 35mm film scanner + a flatbed (like the hp4570c).

Ah yes Misah. I'm familiar with the 8000. We used one at work for a while and it became so annoying that it accidentally got dropped on the pavement in the rear parking lot and run over several times by an unidentified forensic lab van. We eventually wrote it up as a suicide. I'm looking at an epson which will do up to 8x10 slides which is great since i work in 35, 120, 4x5 and 8x10. It has a pretty good track record and does great scans. The other is a canon slide/neg scanner but it will only do the 35mm. Decisions decisions.

Flatbed scanner? I'm still using an Epson ES1200SC - purchased about ten years ago. We've ben through many adventures - like updating to a G4 with no SCSI support - got a SCSI card and revived it. Went to OSX and had no support - then found VueScan and revived it again.If it goes bely up, I think I would be lost! I feel your pain!!! Wolf
