I just got this in my inbox today. I'm thinking virus, maybe? A dumb one at that. I mean, July 10, 2002? WTF? Needless to say, I didn't open the attachment... ;) Anybody else get one of these?

Ardiva ( ) posted Fri, 27 February 2004 at 5:28 PM

I haven't as yet.. if I did, I certainly would delete it! The attachment is of a screensaver genre and more than likely a humungus virus.

I haven't got this, but thank you for the heads up. I have alerted admin re this situation...

Er, I'd say it's a scrap file. That is, what exists on your Clipboard when you copy and paste something. But it's definitely a virus. Some of them use scrap files to insinuate themselves to your computer. This one apparently grabbed whatever was first available and sent itself as a mail.

Hmmmm, but a scrap file from where Erlik? Is it from x2000's computer do you mean? I wish I understood these things a bit better, I just let VET take care of my side of things...

This E-Mail did not come from any of our servers. It contains the following virus... Norton AntiVirus removed the attachment: Zip 100 (D).LNK.scr. The attachment was infected with the W32.Bugbear.B.Dam virus. Dont open it! Clint

Thanks Clint. I didn't think it would have come from our servers...

He means a scrap file from an infected person's computer, mailing itself out, probably to everyone in that person address book. Not sure how widespread this may be, but be on guard, folks. I wouldn't think most people would be dumb enough to open the attachment, but then again, a lot of people ARE that dumb, because viruses wouldn't spread far if they weren't. Hell, I usually delete anything at all questionable unread, but not everyone is so cautious. I just wanted to warn everyone to be on the lookout for this.:)

Thanks..when will these idiots find something better to do with there time....sighs

Erlik ( ) posted Sat, 28 February 2004 at 3:10 AM

Bugbear is an older virus, a year or something like that, so it won't be as widespread as a new virus. OTOH, I received several specimens of Swen last two days. :-) When that one started several months ago, I was getting several hundred infected mails daily. BTW, sorry for not explaining better. Scrap file is a file format, used by Windows for that thing with Clipboard. Virus is the scrap file. BTW, an antivirus program I can recommend is NOD32: www.eset.com Better than Norton. Other things needed to secure your computer against viruses are: a firewall (www.zonelabs.com for ZoneAlarm) and a spyware remover/innoculator, like Spybot Search & Destroy (don't know the link), cause it prevents Trojans and backdoors from settling in your computer.

"Thanks..when will these idiots find something better to do with there time"' When they turn 18 and the potential consequences of getting caught become far more serious.
