It is not really necessairy to make the file square (for wood I would want long planks(?) to prevent too much repetition), as long as you use the half of the pixel dimensions for the offset. Any rectangle will do. Otherwise you are forced to use rather flat-looking wood, in my opinion. Layering tiles of different sizes can break up repetition too. Good luck!
