If I can just get my e-mail to open I can upload the next Aliens file to Vanishing Point. This gif is just to show the use of the flash prop in an animation. Obviously the colours are much better in the proper render. Should be up in a day or two. John will most probably anounce here when it goes up. Note (if you can see in the small picture) that the cocking lever moves with the flash, and the grenade launcher and stock retract during firing. And the trigger moves.

xantor ( ) posted Thu, 04 March 2004 at 9:55 PM

Is that the dodger one? Your name should be on the thumbnail too, since you converted it.

numanoid ( ) posted Thu, 04 March 2004 at 10:44 PM

No. Mine is not up yet. I didn't put up the Dodger one, that is also for Poser, but it is a prop. Mine is a figure so that you can parent it to both hands for animations, and has many moving parts, and is textured. Should be up in a day or two.

MachineClaw ( ) posted Thu, 04 March 2004 at 10:54 PM

Is that acturate? the front of the gun in the movie did not retract like that, there is a pump handle on the bottom of the barrel for the gernade launcher that acts like a pump shotgun but the whole front of the gun didn't move as far as I know. don't mean to be picky it's a nicely done model, just looks kinda odd in the animated gif to me.

numanoid ( ) posted Thu, 04 March 2004 at 11:15 PM

In the actual movie you never see them using the grenade launcher. In the computer game, it seems as though it does retract like that, but I may have used some artistic license. Or would that be un-artistic licence. Obviously no-one actually has to use that movement if they don't want to, I just did it for my own animation purposes. Better to have the option and never use it, than to want to use it and not have it.

MachineClaw ( ) posted Fri, 05 March 2004 at 12:24 AM

tru dat. never played the puter game so have no reference. btw Ripley uses the gernade launcher at in the Queen hive near the end of Aliens as well as the flame thrower.

Well, if you know anyone who can model, I still need the flamethrower, bottom left. Just give me a mesh, I will do the Poser conversion, textures, everything else. Mmmmm, and maybe the rest of the things in this pic need to be modelled as well, but I won't say that, because it might be begging, lol. And I suppose I am dreaming if I think anyone will model a uniform like that as a freebie. I've done the walls and corridors, just texturing them now.

Ref pictures of someone that created the body armor for die cast diarama's. some close up pictures that may help a modeler.

numanoid ( ) posted Fri, 05 March 2004 at 1:26 AM

Mmmm, some serious work on the site. And not a computer in site? How do the e-mail their stuff to each other? Strange people those. Why can't they just be normal and get a computer, a modelling program, and then dissapear from the face of the planet like I did. PS Is that big ball of fire still up in the sky? I haven't seen it for days.

Questor ( ) posted Fri, 05 March 2004 at 2:36 AM

In the actual movie you never see them using the grenade launcher In the Command Centre sequence when the Aliens break the perimeter two of the marines use the grenade launcher and Hicks demonstrates it to Ripley prior to the facehugger attack in the medlab. The launcher is again used by Ripley in the Queen's Chamber when she destroys the egg sack. The grenade launcher is a 5 shot launcher for impact or timed airburst grenades (similar to ones available to modern military) it works in the same manner as a pump shotgun. The black fore-grip slides back to cock the weapon (for some reason there's an ejector port on the side - probably because it's a hacked up pump shotgun under there) the loader for the launcher is under the grip in the main slide of the launcher. There is a firing trigger for the grenade launcher just in front of the rifle magazine. For the rifle itself, the cocking handle is above the grip and behind the magazine and operated seperately to the grenade launcher.

I am dreaming if I think anyone will model a uniform like that as a freebie I suspect you might be seeing as there's a version of that armour for sale at Daz. But, you never know.

numanoid ( ) posted Fri, 05 March 2004 at 2:43 AM

OK, that is the definitive word. And now that you mention all the sequences my memory comes flooding back. I have only watched the films about 20 times each, lol, so I forget some things. Should I redo the model or will people be happy with that? I used a different type of grenade launcher when I was in the army and based my model on the workings of the one I used. PS Questor, did you see how nice the Powerloader turned out? Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

xantor ( ) posted Fri, 05 March 2004 at 3:38 AM

You don`t have to redo the model, as you said, no one actually has to use that movement.

Questor ( ) posted Fri, 05 March 2004 at 12:59 PM

Hi Numanoid, Sorry it took a while to get back but I've just bought two new workstations and setting up all the software and assorted bits is taking it's toll. No I haven't see the finished powerloader though I'm pleased it came out right, that's great news. :) I also agree with Xantor, it's not necessary to redo the model, most uses will be still image not animation so it's not like it's something that "needs" to be accurate to the original.

OReillyTX ( ) posted Fri, 05 March 2004 at 11:48 PM

Marine armor and uniforms for M3 and V3 would be very very nice.

Questor ( ) posted Sat, 06 March 2004 at 5:26 AM

If you pop along to www.daz3d.com and check out a set of clothing in the New Releases section of the store called MOS Liberators or search for Uzilite you may be unsurprised at the source of inspiration for that set - though it's only available for Mike3 at the moment - enough requests might get one for Vickie. Unfortunately because of restrictions in this forum I can't give you a direct link to it. I'm not even sure anymore whether I can even post an image of the thing. Bloody restrictions here are getting silly.

I was searching for reference pics today, and I found this. Remington 870 shotgun inside the slotted Franchi SPAS-12.

This is a real thing that actually exists, and the similarity to the Aliens rifle is very very close indeed.

the other side.

Methinks I amy be redoing my model after all. Even if just for my own use. The thing in the bottom of this is a shotgun, not a grenade launcher.

numanoid ( ) posted Sun, 07 March 2004 at 6:57 PM

And this id how the slide is supposed to work. My BIIIG mistake.

In the movie the shotgun was said to be the gernade launcher. the gernades were shotgun shell size but only silver with red caps. they were on the table when Ripley is being shown how to operate the weapon. they discharge out the 'gernade' side just like a shotgun shell would be spit out after firing. this is shown in the ripley blows up the queen eggs section, there is actually a scene if you slow-mo it where you see the shotgun shell fly out. Sorry, I'm a huge Aliens fan, and farscape too.

numanoid ( ) posted Mon, 08 March 2004 at 1:04 AM

I know, I bought the DVD this weekend and sat going through it in stop frame. I was just saying that in this "real" version, the bottom part is just a shotgun. I know in the movie it was a grenade launcher. I have decided to redo the model for myself, and when it is finished if anyone wants to use it for animation I will just e-mail them the file. The new version will work just like the movie one. I didn't think that anyone actually did animations anymore, so I didn't think anyone would actually be interested in the moving features. I will fix them up.

I'm sorry if I came across ungrateful. Thank you for going to the length to provide a free item to the community, it's generious and I aplaude you for any version that you put up for people.
