Subject: Can I render poser4 scenes in Poser5

drag ( ) posted Sun, 07 March 2004 at 3:14 PM · edited Sun, 12 January 2025 at 6:06 AM

Ok so i've save my poser4 as pz3 files but can't get them to open in 5. What do I need to do. Never had so much trouble as I have with poser5. But I love the Art I see render with the firefly renderer.

I had no trouble opening my P4 pz3s in P5. Some of them loaded with texture nodes connected to all kinds of wild things but they were easily corrected.

You shouldn't need to do anything...just use FileOpen and navigate to the pz3. Why can't you open them in P5? Do you get any error messages or anything? If so, what are they?

I've never had a problem working back in forth between the two versions. Perhaps you should contact Curious Labs tech support. The only reason I could think of things no opening is that if you have moved a texture or model to another location on your computer and P5 can't find them.

Can you not render them or not open them? Your subject line asks if you can render Poser 4 scenes, yet your message says that you can't open the scene.

Ok I can't get Poser5 to locate them. I have everything stored in my poser4 runtime. It doesn't matter if it's one I've made or one I've bought. Poser5 can't locate it.

Like I said earlier, you have to navigate to your pz3's yourself. You can store pz3's anywhere on your hard drive; Poser doesn't know where they are. In P5, click File then select Open. A dialog box will appear and you have to locate the file yourself. When you do, double-click on it and it should open.

Hey, wait a minute.... You just said: "It doesn't matter if it's one I've made or one I've bought. Poser5 can't locate it." Are you sure you're talking about PZ3's? (Poser scene files). Or could you mean items such as characters you've bought and installed into P4? If the latter is the case, you have to link the P4 runtime within P5 before P5 will find them.

Sorry I'm new to poser> I've only had poser4 for a while and mainly used it to import figures into Vue. But been learning it more and enjoying creating strickly with it. So for my birthday my husband bought me 5, but I'm having alot of problems with it. It is pz3 files that I'm talking about. So how do I link P4 runtime within P5? If you like you can e-mail me at drag_k@yahoo.com Once again Thanks for your patients with a newbie.

Check this link for how to link (sorry) your p4 runtime in p5. However, if they are pz3's you're looking for, linking won't help you even if the pz3's are in your runtime. You *still* have to go to File/Open and navigate to where the pz3's are.

It sounds to me as if you haven't set Poser 5 to your Poser 4 Runtime directory. By default P5 looks in its own runtime for geometry and textures.

Once you install Poser 5, you can double-click on any pz3 file and it will open in Poser 5. Keep this in mind if you have Poser 4/ Pro Pack installed on the same machine: Poser 5 changes the registry setting for pz3 files. So, if you double-click and expect Poser 4 to open, you'll get a nice suprise when you see P5 come up.

You can of course tell Windows to always open pz3 files with Poser 4, after you install P5.
