heyas; i, too, went and read the tos on the front page on... sunday, i think. it looked exactly the same as it did one year ago, including the replies from 1999. yesterday, i checked again, and it has changed slightly, and the old replies were deleted. this paragraph, in particular has changed: Our site's registration form requires users to give us contact information (like their name and email address) and demographic information (like their zip code, age, or income level). We use customer contact information from the registration form to send the user information about our company and promotional material from some of our partners. The customer's contact information is also used to contact the visitor when necessary and shared with other companies who may want to contact our visitors. Users may opt-out of receiving future mailings; see the choice/opt-out section below. Demographic and profile data is collected at our site. We use this data for other purposes. We use this data to tailor the visitor's experience at our site, showing them content that we think they might be interested in, and displaying the content according to their preferences. This information is shared with advertisers on an aggregate basis. ...particularly the last sentance, i believe. while this site has almost always been ad-supported, the users' personal information was not shared with other parties.
The software was upgraded this past year to require valid e-mail addresses (not free e-mail servers) upon sign up. That way trouble makers could be tracked. It was one of the things Roy changed before he left. My wife wants to join this site, but she can't because we only have one e-mail addy. Her's is one of the free ones and it won't work. -JH.
There's nothing better than a quick spam bait email address with Yahoo or Hotmail .I can't tell you how thankful my real addy's inbox is for not having to bear the brunt of unwanted ,ultra-redundant crap from two-bit hucksters .I guess you've raised yet another good reason for not signing up new members with renderosity Hanging a ton of banners on your site is your right and your gamble ,but keep your spam out of my in box -that's my property !

When exactly did EdgeNet change the TOS? The reason I ask is that as soon as this whole thing blew up I went straight to the TOS to remind myself of what they said (it seemed the pertinent thing to do). What they said (with regard to third party access to user info) read very much like they do now, which is very much like I remember how they read through most of DSI's tenure. I thought they were dodgy looking back then, and seemed to fit in with the distinctly commercial approach the site adopted. The TOS has definitely changed in other respects since my initial post-bustup visit, but it looks pretty much the same to me as far as private information goes. Was the TOS changed in installments, with the user info sections updated almost immediately, the rest following a couple of days later? Did anyone make a copy of the previous TOS? I wish I had.
