Press Release#29

For Immediate Release

Eovia Ships TransPoser
~ Bring Poser Characters to Life in Carrara Studio ~

Mountain View, California March 15, 2004 Eovia Corporation, developer and publisher of leading 3D software, today announced the immediate availability of TransPoser. TransPoser is a full-featured plug-in to dynamically import animated Poser 4 and 5 figures into Carrara Studio 3.

Following a strategic partnership announced by Eovia and Curious Labs last May, users of Poser and Carrara Studio 3 will now have the ability to import and manage Poser 5 scenes and animations in Carrara Studio 3, including morph targets animation, skeleton animation, and hair and dynamic clothing. Furthermore, TransPoser uses the Poser engine directly inside Carrara Studio, for seamless integration of Poser figures and extraordinarily powerful results.

TransPoser speaks to the need for a straightforward link between Poser and Carrara Studio, said Charles Brissart, Director of Software Engineering for Eovia. Many Poser customers are seeking out products that are capable of integrating their characters and animations into more complete and complex scenes, and Carrara Studio is an obvious solution.

A large majority of Poser users have anxiously been awaiting the ability to use Poser and Carrara Studio together, said Katherine Howard, Vice President for Curious Labs. The professional edge for Poser comes alive when used together with the power of Carrara Studio.

Major Features

Import Poser figures with textures and clothing:

Import Poser characters complete with textures (texture maps, bump maps, transparency maps), clothing, hair (Poser4 style only) and other props. You now have access to all the high-end content of Poser for your Carrara Studio scenes.

Import fully animated Poser Scenes:

Create your animation in Poser and import it in Carrara Studio. Bring the power of Carrara Studio to your Poser animations by adding Physics, Caustics, Particles, high-quality rendering and more.

Dynamic clothing

Simulate the animation of dynamic clothing in Poser and render it inside Carrara Studio exactly as it was in Poser!

Consistent link with Poser:

Modify the pose of your figure in Poser, reopen the Carrara Studio file and the pose of your character is updated.

Availability

The US version of TransPoser is available immediately for the Mac and Windows platforms, at a suggested retail price of US$129.00.

SPECIAL INTRODUCTORY OFFER: until April 15, 2004, TransPoser will be offered with free ground shipping (continental US only).

For more information and direct purchase, contact Eovia in the US at 1-866 856-3775, or connect to the Eovia website at www.eovia.com.

The TransPoser plug-in requires a valid install of both Carrara Studio 3 and Poser 4 or 5.

"A large majority of Poser users have anxiously been awaiting the ability to use Poser and Carrara Studio together" Yeah. I've only been waiting(with baited breath, I might add) since 1998, when I bought Poser 3 to add to Ray Dream Studio 5.0. This was back when they were both made by the same company, MetaCreations. There was even a plug in that let you use Poser 3 scenes in Ray Dream 5.( of course this was before conforming clothing, transparency in poser, magnets, etc.) I thought it would be the beginning of a long and happy relationship, then shortly after Poser 4, MetaCreations sold off everything to foster MetaStreaming, for the web. Whatever happened with that? Anyway, I'm ecstatic that TransPoser finally came out, and as soon as I get it, my computer's internal movie studio will be complete. (For now, anyway....)

milamber42 ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2004 at 8:28 PM

I was suprised to see this on Eovia's page last week. I finally built a new computer and upgraded to Carrara 3 (it's on the way). Any other info on this? Anyone here beta test it? I also posted in the Poser forum, since I did not see a post there.

Ringo ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2004 at 10:11 PM

We beta tested it. I highly recommend it. It makes Poser animations look soo much better. More info coming later. Ringo

brycetech ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2004 at 10:16 PM

Can someone give me some info on how it works with Poser4? I think I want this (man, all the new computer toys this month..I may not have time to work.. Ya reckon they'll take the excuse "I have new computer toys to play with so I wont be in today?") lol BT

If it works like the Mover plugin for Vue, and I'm sure it does, you create your character and pose/animate it in poser, then you import the .pz3 file into vue/carrara. In vue the only thing that sometimes needs tweaking is the highlight settings on the materials, it gets all the image maps right where you put them. Then, once it's in vue, the poser scene behaves like any other vue object. You can change the materials around, perform booleans with it, etc. Vue's Mover also lets you create a path, similar to a walk path, apply various motion settings( Motorcycle, airplane, etc.) and cycle the animation of the poser scene. So, for instance, you take a poser figure, make them flap their arms (or wings) ONCE, then set the cycle to repeat, make a path through the sky, et voila! you have a flapping, flying figure.

Question - How does it work with Poser 4 and Mac OSX C3? I run C3 under OSX, and I have Poser4, which only runs under classic. Does this still work or must I upgrade to Poser5 to be able to work in OSX? Does this question make sense? Regards, Paul

Sydney_Andrews ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 1:43 AM

I hope there will be an increase of animations. 129 seems a little steep for having something for just remapping a poser figure in C3. Right now, because I don't do any animations, its not a good value for me. The last 20 or so images in my gallery have been imported from poser by hand, and now its to the point where I have done it so much, I can map something in a matter of minuets. Even more of a time saver, once I remap something in C3, I save the shader in my library, so that, when I bring in V2 or V3, I simply select the figure, and apply the shader.
Don't get me wrong, I hope people really use this to its fullest extent and produce some great animations, but that should be the key focus; animations.
So please, please, please...make some animations! ( I would actually like to see some) If not...$129???
Regards to all,
E.

PAGZone, While the Eovia team didn't say it was supposed to work with P4, according to some of the testers, it does. (I still think that Eovia doesn't "guarantee" it like they do for P5 but I saw no comments about problems) I just tried to confirm myself but Poser 4 on Mac OSX has always been a little quirky for me and is back to it's habit of crashing Classic on save. I worked out that issue previously but since upgrading to P5, have not popped open P4 until today. Hey, it's easy for me to spend your money, but if you upgrade to P5 you absolutely won't regret it. The enhnacments to that program are outstanding. Mark

Echo871, I went through your gallery and you really do some nice work with Poser & Carrara. I wasn't aware of your work before because I don't like the vast majority of stuff rendered in Poser ( glowing nostrils, blank stares etc. ), so I usually skip the Poser galleries. I think you should occasionally post some of your images in the Carrara section also. I'm not sure its's at first apparent that you are rendering in Carrara, you might post that in your description and not just in your poster credits. I believe your use of Carrara to render is what gives you the ability to create a much higher quality of rendering than I have seen out of Poser, Bryce or Vue. Perhaps you might draw more Poser artists to Carrara if you touted your Carrara use a little more. Nice Work! Patrick Tuten

milamber42 ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 8:46 AM

If you go to the TransPoser product page, there is a step-by-step page that shows how to use it. It looks like you just open the scene file and Carrara reads it. Does TransPoser support compressed (.pzz) scene files?

milamber42 ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 8:50 AM

BTW.. Has anyone tried it with DAZ's figures? It should not make a difference, but I just wondered if anyone did.

MarkBremmer ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 9:33 AM

Yes, the DAZ figures work great. I'm certainly not a Poser guru so pardon my question, but how do you create a .pzz file? I'll give it a try and let you know. I just couldn't see how to do it with the P5 I have. Mark

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 10:34 AM

Excellent. This is exactly what I've been waiting for.

With the P5 --> Carrara sidegrade price + TransPoser, Carrara has greatly increased both its usefulness and value.

Yes, Evoia should catch a lot of Poser types with this one.

PAGZone ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 10:54 AM

Thanks Mark. I was waiting to upgrade to P5, as my G4 was a bit slow to run it, but now that I have upgraded to a G5 DP, I guess I don't have an excuse anymore... Thanks, Paul

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 1:49 PM

Ringo: TransPoser tested with OS X (Jaguar)? Probably tested with Windows Poser 5 SR 3 and the Mac OS X beta version of Poser 5.

GabrielK ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 5:00 PM

I was pleasantly surprised to see that TransPoser supports Poser 4 but like others I'm waiting to hear how well it supports Poser4 running in OSX Classic mode. Importing figures manually does get a bit tedious, but like Echo I've done it enough where it's not too much of a big deal.

Nicholas86 ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 7:22 PM

It is nice. The fact you can import the animations from Poser 5 with cloth dynamics is nice. I agree the $129 is a bit steep. You do get quite a bang for the buck. Brian Hinton

file_102537.jpg

Mark, A pzz file is a compressed pz3. Pull up the General Preferences window from the edit menu and check "Use File Compression".

MarkBremmer ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 9:25 PM

Thanks milamber42, learn somthin' new every day. Transposer does not handle .pzz files. :( That said, I do like the way TransPo works with Poser files; it merely subcribes to the geometry from Poser. A Carrara file with a single DAZ character is only 40K. Mark

milamber42 ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 9:39 PM

Thanks Mark! I wonder what the file size is with an animation that uses morphs -- like M3 going from normal to super muscular or something like that. Does TransPoser support animating morphs?

MarkBremmer ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 10:11 PM

Everybody needs an incredible hulk moment! ;) Good question. I just tested it with morphs for file size and on this test it added about 10k per second of animation at 29.97 fps. Of course, any geometery that you actually add to the Carrara file (instead of subscribing to the poser character with the TransPoser) will add more size to the file. You know that but I had to say it. mark

milamber42 ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 10:27 PM

Just as long as it will handle morph changes, I'm happy. Thanks again Mark!

Coupon from 3dcommune works fine! You enter the number on the last page. It did take the $30 off. You can not combine it with the free shipping offer from Eovia. Hope they are shipping this from the San Diego office... I live about 5 miles from there.

falconperigot ( ) posted Wed, 17 March 2004 at 12:37 PM

So there's a special offer - but why not Europe? The UK price is already much more than the US price AND we have to pay for shipping. Bummer Eovia!

pixelmouse ( ) posted Wed, 17 March 2004 at 1:01 PM

us european users always get a kicking, im in the UK and with a $65 shipping charge (must be personaly delivered) its not worth getting it from the states, why no electronic dowloaded Poser 5 for 91 fantastic, at $99 the transposer plugin would cost around 50-60 not the 120 ill have to pay to buy it from eovia france, this is NOT fair to say the least, same product huge price difference, is anyone from eovia listening...

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Wed, 17 March 2004 at 3:17 PM

Most everything in Europe costs more than in the US.

I won't get into the politics here, in this forum....this isn't the place for it. As sorely tempted as I am to do so.......

Bigt ( ) posted Wed, 17 March 2004 at 3:48 PM

Yeah just ordered the European overpriced version, not a lot else for us Brits to do, just hope it's worth the price, Been having a fair bit of success just importing files into C3 as Wavefront Obj, but hopefully this will make the process that much better, Just waiting for the Postman !........... :0)

pixelmouse ( ) posted Wed, 17 March 2004 at 4:11 PM

Having just bought poser 5 and still only learning Carrara im gonna hold on a little while and hope someone from Eovia looks at this forum and does something about the price issue, ive realised that the plugin will cost more than my ug from poser 3 to v 5, its the same with the vectorstyle plugin I just cant justify that sort of price at the moment, saying that Im itching to get some art done, the possibilities are endless.

FWIW us european's or brits arent complaining about the cost of the plugins JUST the extra cost we have to pay over our american cousins, the power of carrara 3 and the plugins that have been created are amazing eovia have made some really COOOOOL software.

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Wed, 17 March 2004 at 4:55 PM

Many of the extra costs are tacked on by European governments, not by Evoia - nor by other private companies.

Something To Do At 3:00AM

Bigt ( ) posted Wed, 17 March 2004 at 5:33 PM

Agreed Xenophonz, like pixelmouse said we aren't moaning about the price of the plugin, Eovia software is well worth the money IMO, but the offer of a downloadable version would have been really welcome for some of us, Again not a moan or a gripe just an opinion.

glought ( ) posted Wed, 17 March 2004 at 6:26 PM

I did the $10 off coupon and got TransPoser the next day. I live 11 miles from Eovia's headquarters in San Diego.

falconperigot ( ) posted Thu, 18 March 2004 at 2:34 AM

XENOPHONZ, the price difference doesn't take into consideration tax (which is the only bit added by governments). The price for Europe is 129 EUROS, that (at the current exchange rate) is 158 USD. Europeans pay tax and shipping on top of that.

Kingfisher ( ) posted Thu, 18 March 2004 at 3:32 AM

I agree it is rather pricey here in Europe. I also feel it is rather expensive where ever you are.Particulary when you compare it to the price of the cost of upgrading to the actual programs. Also I thought that Amapi started in France. Europe? So why then are we not being treated the same? And Yes why is a download not available?

pixelmouse ( ) posted Thu, 18 March 2004 at 4:38 AM

Point 1: if curious labs can offer a poser 5 download over 600mb in total, surely eovia can i'm assuming the plugin isnt that big. Point 2: when i bought poser the other night I wasnt stung for english tax and shipping. Point 3: I want this plugin just at a fair price, no more no less.
