I should post this in 3d links, but these are sites that are for modelling (real and 3d)..I was looking for the next spaceship (collective groan..Pakled's doing another spaceship..;) but thought these might be useful to only this forum..
Starship modeller http://www.starshipmodeler.com/tech/othr_ref.htm ref pics of spaceships, forums, etc. Lost Plan-it http://my.execpc.com/%7Eppavlovi/lostplanit001.htm Reference pics, links, etc. more physical than 3d Costume/prop building http://www.studiocreations.com/howto/index.html more towards actual outfits, but not a bad reference site Scale Calc http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/franckwagner/SCALE.htm figure out scaling metric/english, etc. Starship Schematics http://www.shipschematics.net/ blueprints of various ships IDIC page http://members.aol.com/IDICPage/main.html pics of the original Trek models used in filming Eduardo's page http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/manatee/272/ many, many airplane blueprints enjoy

Thanks for the links. :) I will probably never use them myself but I'm sure some of those ship builders out there are salivating even as I type this...

Yeah, thanks a lot. Just spent 3 hours looking at those when I should have been doing some work I brought home to do over the weekend. D'oh. Seriously, nice links. :) John

Pakled;

from Silent Running? My second favourite SciFi after Dark Star, but who'd want to do the models from Dark Star - except maybe the rubber chicken - they weren't meant to be good.

This looks good!

John

pakled ( ) posted Sun, 07 March 2004 at 4:26 PM

actually, one of the sites has reference pics for Dark Star, so if you feel inclined..;) it's from Silent Running, just posted the final pic..thanks.

I love Silent Running. but putting the forests and stuff in the domes would take sone high poly work. Thyough I wouldn't mind having models of Huey, Dewey and Louis. Wasn't someone here at rosity working on that model?

pakled ( ) posted Mon, 08 March 2004 at 7:49 PM

I forgot to do a couple of things to the dome..to intrude slightly so that I could texture the grid on it..I thought about it, and was going to take a regular grid, and do some 'forests' somehow..but went with a cheap texture..;)
yeah, someone is working on the robots (really detailed stuff..much better than the one I did..;), I think it was one of the modelling program galleries..

It's a gorgeous model of the ship tho pakled. Silent Running was such an underappreciated movie. One of the few films I've ever seen in my life that genuinely moved me emotionally. And Huey, Dewey and Louis can certainly lay claim to being the first robots with personality, shooting Lucas' claim out of the a water by several years.

If you didn't need to get too close to the greenery in the domes, you could use the billboard technique of mapping alpha-channel-transparency foliage textures onto flats. This is used in games a lot; some good examples occur in Deus Ex. You get extremely low poly counts at the expense of big (32bit) texture files. Agree with bone -- it's a great model. M.

uh..;) hmm..I'll have to look that one up, but thanks..;)

This page might be helpful as regards plant modeling. With alpha channel, you just set one particular colour to appear as transparent when you render, and use that as background colour in the texture pic.

In a rather different direction, try these spacecraft... http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/scalemodels/
