Subject: Transposer, marketing and what the...???!!!

jval ( ) posted Wed, 24 March 2004 at 3:29 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 7:29 PM

Eovia has offered a time limited discount on Transposer to Renderosity and 3D Commune members. That's rather nice and I thank them. That's my face #1 speaking. Now here's face #2. It's probably a safe bet that most members of these two communities do not use Carrara. I on the other hand have purchased Carrara 2, Carrara 3, VectorStyle and PowerPack. Certainly this suggests that I might be a somewhat better prospective customer for Transposer than those other members. But being a long time multiple Eovia customer seems insufficient in itself to warrant being offered a similar introductory special. Even more astounding, it doesn't even seem to be worth an email telling me that Transposer even exists let alone is available. Of course the fact that I am posting this here means I can get the discount so it's not as if I'm losing anything. But doesn't this whole sales approach seem a little bit backwards? Was Eovia's marketing department rendered with the non-realistic renderer instead of the realistic? I'm not incredibly upset about this but it does make me wonder... - Jack

Just give them time. They'll offer everyone a discount when they can.

Many of us have been abused by a unreliable MetaCreation corporation who took care of RayDream and Poser. MetaCreations released patch for RayDream 4 to integrate with Poser 3. RayDream 4.5 and 5 was released and there was no patch for it to work with Poser 3 or 4. Eovia is taking good care of it and wants to promote Transporter to impress us. That is perfectly fine with me. They need some $$ to support their continuance development for intergation with Carrara and Poser. Waldo

...They'll offer everyone a discount when they can. ...They need some $$ to support their continuance development for intergation with Carrara and Poser. Agreed. But that isn't my point. Again, the majority of community members probably do not use Carrara so it is unlikely they will be interested in buying a Carrara plug-in. Therefore promoting an introductory discount for Transposer in these venues is like firing a shotgun into a forest in the hopes that you might hit a fly or two. On the other hand, registered Carrara users are all potential Transposer customers and those who have also purchased C add-ons may be even more likely to buy. Not all Carrara users frequent the on-line communities nor do they necessarily visit Eovia's site frequently. Those users, even though they may have a need for Transposer, will remain blithely unaware that it even exists. My comment is not about personally saving money- after all, because I'm here I do know about and can take advantage of this discount. In any case, the discount isn't a huge issue to me. I bought both VectorStyle and PowerPack only to have Eovia sales discount them shortly afterwards. This was a minor annoyance but I certainly didn't lose any sleep over it. Even though I don't use Poser a lot I'll probably get Transposer anyhow, if only to financially support Eovia. After all, I want to see continued Carrara development. I have no objection to their offering promo discounts here. It does absolutely no harm. But when email is cheap, efficient and fast I fail to understand why they don't also directly target their registered customers. Offering them a discount too might make the buy/not buy difference. As it is, the only reason I know Transposer exists is because of these forums. That's what makes me wonder- seems kind of ass-backwards to me. - Jack

You have bad point. It was just advertisement for who might be interested to take new direction with Carrara and Poser. I am glad they did advertisement work because I dont want to check websites to look for something I need. I am VUE customer but the renderer is bad; too yellowish, washed, and depress color. Carrara's renderer is awesome; bright and realistic sunlight able to see more of my art work.

A positive spin would be this: Eovia wants to reward those who don't just use Carrara, but have also joined the active Carrara community. Regular Carrara users don't get the discounts, but the really "involved" users do. If you look at it that way, Eovia is rewarding their best customers. The ones who have not just helped their bottom line, but who also endorse the product and show off its capabilities to the broader 3D community.

Eovia also provided the same discount to the members of the Carrara Yahoo group.

Eovia offered me $10 off on TransPoser. I am a long time customer of Eovia (even since before Eovia). Eovia offered 3DCommune members $30 off on TransPoser a week later. I figured Eovia is trying to get people outside the RayDream/Carrara curve to become interested in products they sell.

If you look at it that way, Eovia is rewarding their best customers. Good point and perfectly acceptable. But I'm not commenting (nor even complaining) that Eovia is promoting Transposer or offering a discount here. $30 will barely buy a so-so lunch for two so it's not a big deal. The problem is that only by visiting this forum did I learn about this plug-in; quite by accident really. Even if Shonner was only offered $10 off at least he was told about this product. I, on the other hand, periodically get emails from Eovia offering to sell me what they've already sold me. But when something new is available they suddenly become coy and prefer email silence. How many others will remain unaware of Transposer? My main hope is that they might read this thread and realize that sales could be improved if they let all their customers know about Transposer- regardless of any discount. Call me old fashioned but I believe that if you got it, flaunt it! People can't buy a better mouse trap if they don't know it exists. - Jack

Eovia is doing advertisment much as they can. They can't monopolize every webpage or tv station for their advertisement. If their product is excellent then dont complain about their advertisement, let them bait other customers. You reminded me about AT&T vs MCI on tv advertisement. I never participiate to any of these long distance company. It is just a way for them to promote their products. If I have a product I would try to promote it on TV or internet to sell it. If you dont like the advertisement then dont buy it. Transporter benefits alot more to me than worry about advertisement. Get a life and enjoy with products you bought or post your complaint on 1 by 1 inch webpage somewhere else.

True, the $20 is no biggy. I spend three times that amount a week in restaurants. I needed TransPoser as soon as I knew about it on their site. I was checking Eovia's and CuriousLab's sites everyday since they had announced TransPoser and Poser5 SP4 getting ready for release.

Yes TransPOSER RULES!!!!

Hoofdcommissaris ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2004 at 1:22 AM

There are an awfull lot of Poser users on Renderosity. They have to live with something called Firefly (which was an awesome underated tv series as well, now being shown on Dutch television, but that is totally off-topic right now), so they might be the main target group for Eovia here. I can imagine a lot of people will eventually grow tired of dressing up Victoria and placing her in pre-made surroundings. When people want to explore new realms (modelling and texturing etc) the need a 3D app. So what is more logical than offering them the smoothest way. Just to let people know that the road is there is important for now and for the future. I am going to search for the $ 30 deal. And maybe wait a little longer... One never knows.

falconperigot ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2004 at 1:24 AM

Jack, I agree with you. I questioned Eovia about their offers because nothing was available to Europeans and was told that an offer was scheduled and to wait for the email. I'm still waiting... It seems silly to risk alienating loyal customers in this way. Mark

Hoofdcommissaris ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2004 at 2:22 AM

I just read the Europe twist on Eovia's site. Strange. But wait. Maybe we get a better discount!

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2004 at 3:09 AM

Carrara does better bone structure than Poser as well.

...They can't monopolize every webpage or tv station for their advertisement. How did you manage to get that interpretation from my simple suggestion that a product announcement email to registered Carrara owners might be a good idea? "Baiting other customers" is perfectly fine but why forget existing ones? - Jack

Jack What the heck. Complaint to the government about advertisement problem. I am sure politicans would laffin at ur face.

brainmuffin ( ) posted Sun, 04 April 2004 at 4:50 PM

Curious Labs, Current publisher of Poser, was recently bought out by the company that makes Shade, a competitor to Carrara. Eovia is probably trying to woo Poser users to purchase Carrara now, before Shade has it's own plug-in or upgrade that can import Poser Figures, and is being sold as a seriously discounted sidegrade to Poser.
