THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: So what was up with the SQL errors and R'osity being down yesterday?

Anybody know anything?

Syncopate ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2004 at 10:22 AM

Same thing is happening today.

Yep. Today, too.

I emailed admin but that's like screaming in a pillow

Apparently the cause of the "Country music" link was a DNS problem. I dunno what causes the "SQL problem" (too many connections), but I suspect it might be R'osity's ISP server.. Cheers, Diolma

I don't know about anyone else, but my IM and e-mail here at Renderosity just deosn't work, period. Haven't heard anything official as to what's going on. AgentPillowSmith

And I quote: We are having a lot of hits today, and spiders. Yesterday was an equipment change and a techie accidentally typed in an IP address wrong. It was fixed quickly, but the fix took time to propagate out to the rest of the Internet.

diolma ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2004 at 3:48 PM

Just from observation, the SQL error (too many connections) seems to start kicking in when there are more than 1600 users logged in.... Earlier today I logged in, and when I finally got a reply (it took about 3 mins, and I'm on broadband), and there were > 2,000 surfers (according to the line at the top). Things were v e r y slow, then, nothing but SQL errors. Spiders??? (well, I spose it IS the World Wide Web) Cheers, Diolma

semi autonomous meta search engines

Erlik ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2004 at 4:09 PM

Spiders are search robots. usually used by search sites like Google and Yahoo and the others. but also used for some less savory business, like looking exactly where they are told not to look, in order to discover "hidden" stuff and enable the download by direct links. that is, there's a file robots.txt put in the root directory and which tells the robots what pages they shouldn't index. Or a bit on the page itself... But since all the pages on Renderosity are dynamically generated and download directories protected, not much use sniffing here. (Can you guess I do that for living? :-) That is, write about computer stuff.) As to the SQL errors, we had them when they were upgrading, didn't we? So something in the code probably. And yeah, had a few of them myself, plus about 40 seconds for a page to start loading.

LOL - thx, ddruckenmiller - I hadn't come across that one before (although I guessed it might be something of that nature) "S.P.I.D.E.R": "Search Periodically for Info Deemed Errrm Relevant" :-)))) Cheers, Diolma

Same here yesterday,.........I was taken to a Country Music Association Awards site,......then Slim Whitman jumped right out of my HD, on to my table top and started sing a country tribute to AC/DC. No, really,..........you should hear "Back in Black" played on a pedal steel, it's like being in the Twilight Zone !

diolma ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2004 at 4:23 PM

Erlik: there was a guy in the Poser(?) forum a few days ago wanting crackes and/or warez. He got pretty hostile when he got blitzed by the loyal crowd (including myself, ahem), accusing them (us) of not being able to write viruses etc. Possible attack? (I do LOVE a good conspiracy theory! - or should that be cons-Piracy). SQL errors caused by upgrades is really very likely (but boring):-)) Cheers, Diolma

ddruckenmiller ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2004 at 4:27 PM

Somebody keys in a number wrong or forgets to clear a backup DNS server and you end up with duplicates - the SQL errors, well...

pakled ( ) posted Fri, 26 March 2004 at 8:26 AM

hmm..all I know is SQL is Structured Query Language, a way of doing databases of various things..I'm sure bondware interfaces with it at some point..
