Subject: Oh great guru's fix my problem please...

meselfr ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2004 at 7:07 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 8:42 AM

I have a quadratic spot light pointed on a Poser5 imported V3 with Quaker Grace Lion Hair... I turn the light to volumetric and all transmap'd materials turn "WHITE"... Bright white... How do I tone this down...

Any ideas...

The only thing I can think of is to make sure the 'Highlight' component of the material is set to Black and 0%. Also check that the transparency is set to 100%. Finally, did you install the latest version of Vue ? (4.22 if you have Vue 4 or use the update feature if you have Vue Pro)

Using Vue Pro 4.52 (latest) I turned off the Higlights on the Hair... Didn't seem to do much... Thanks.

Vue does have a problem in some volumetric situations with alpha planes. I know it is being worked on, but I have run into the same thing many times. I just don't use volumetric on anything that may be an alpha plane basically until there is a solution. Alpha Planes, Poser, Xfrog trees, have all given me problems in volumetric settings. So don't feel alone by any means. :O) I could be wrong but I doubt it perhaps enclude a picture of what you are working on to make sure it is the same problem if you like. Take care.

Section of picture attached...

I finally ended up moving the volume light to an angle that shows on the hand but not the hair... Does have the same effect but it will do until I get a fix/workaround...

Thanks.

...Doesn't have the same effect...

rds ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2004 at 9:32 PM

That is a good idea Meselfr I have done very much the same thing. If you can just get the alpha planes out of direct volumetric light it seems to be ok. I look forward to the solution of this problem and have mentioned it along with other beta testers to e-on so they know about it for sure.

Has anyone had completely transperant objects become partially visible in volumetric light?

Berserga ( ) posted Fri, 26 March 2004 at 10:53 AM

Yep that's the cause... god that SUCKS! Well funny I was just gonna post a question about this and this thread helped me figure it out... Now I wonder if there is any way around this for completely invisible materials?

On the texture I was using the eyebrows were completely transparent (they were painted on the texture) and they showed up bright white too.... I attached a link to the final image... I ended up doing two images.. one with volume lighting, one without, merged them in PSP and added some mystical lighting to make the volume lighting look more like I wanted (not exactly, but closer anyway...)...

Link Contains NUDITY...

Thanks

Another strike against Vue4pro!

gebe ( ) posted Sat, 27 March 2004 at 4:45 AM

In Vue Pro you have the possibility to direct a light EXACTLY to the object (or part of a figure/object) where you want it to point to. This means it will ONLY lighten this part and nothing else. Have you tried to use this feature?

meselfr ( ) posted Sat, 27 March 2004 at 5:31 AM

Are you refering to "influence"? Yes... I imported the Poser object individually once to test and turned off the light to the hair and it still did this... :)

meselfr ( ) posted Sat, 27 March 2004 at 5:35 AM

I really feel it has to do with the rendering engine and how it "renders" the volume of the light.. The influence would only lighten the parts, but the streams of white light are still visible... The more "intensity" of the effect the worse it affects the transmaps.... If you turn the intensity down, which of course diminishes the desired effect, it doesn't do this as badly...

gebe ( ) posted Sat, 27 March 2004 at 5:49 AM

Do you have this problem only with this hair? (I don't have it and cannot try out) or with any Poser hair?

meselfr ( ) posted Sat, 27 March 2004 at 8:44 AM

I had the problem with any transmaped components... Eyelashes, eyebrows(completely transparent), and pubic hair all glowed white...

I just posted a workaround in a new thread. I hope this will work better for you :)

meselfr ( ) posted Sat, 27 March 2004 at 6:16 PM

Thanks this looks very promising... I was planning on doing a mermaid picture next under water with some volume lighting with caustics... I will give it a shot..

agiel ( ) posted Sat, 27 March 2004 at 6:18 PM

Like I said... it is not a 100% solution, but it does seem to remove the 'whiteness' in transparent areas (there is still a slightly darker tone to transparent areasthough, which makes them not completely transparent in some situations).

It helped a lot...Thanks.... Note URL/Link contains some nudity...

That really turned out well thanks for sharing.

meselfr ( ) posted Mon, 29 March 2004 at 4:05 PM

Thanks agiel and rds... I am now happy with Vue... I just upgraded my PC and it hasn't crashed once... I can use Volume lighting (it's a pain to correct, but it works) how I want... :)^2
