Subject: PhotoReal & Ethnic Texture Recommendations

DCArt ( ) posted Fri, 02 April 2004 at 10:15 AM · edited Fri, 14 February 2025 at 6:28 PM

I'm looking for recommendations on photorealistic texture recommendations for some promotional renders. I already do have a few, but need some that are more ethnic ... African, Polynesian, Egyptian, Oriental, Native American, and so on. Also, need recommendations for male and female textures. It doesn't matter, really, which characters they are for, because I'm using the Universal Texture Converter to convert them so that they can fit the P5 male and female figures. The textures that I use will be credited in the promo renders ... I just need some good pointers as to which ones to use. Thanks!

well...theres a lot of textures of "white" poser people....you can make them "colored" by simply changing the diffuse value in the master shader....you can create a Multitude of colorful people...you can also use the skin shader and experiment with that....i think that will give better results than simply changing the Diff value.... but wait....white people are also "colored" right? i mean last time i checked "white" was a color....LOL.....silly me....

Hmmm ... to me, the results aren't as good as if you get a texture that was derived from natural photos. Simply tinting a caucasian texture doesn't always get accurate results - especially with palms and soles of feet. I just came across MaskEdit's "Natural Skin" series and they look like they will definitely fit the bill. They are awesome!!!!

For ethnic, I really like Dalinese's "Brown Sugar" textures for V2/Millennium Girls. They come with "bald" and "hair" textures, and if you use the "hair" versions, you really don't need other hair. They look good on the MilBoys, too.

Thanks randy and geoegress ... I checked out both recommendations and you're right ... they are awesome! Since investigating this a bit further and trying to convert V3 textures, I have learned that they don't quite work well on Judy. The nostrils don't quite line up and she has big dark splotches on her nose, and the eyebrows come out looking like caterpillars. 8-) So it looks like I'll have to stick with V1/2 or M1/2 textures if they aren't made solely for the Poser 5 folks. But dang, keep those recommendations coming, they're great! Do you know of any Polynesian or Oriental ones?

Oh yeah ... if all else fails, I am having some success by using Syyd's "Beach Baby" with color adjustments. It seems to hold up well with different diffuse colors. 8-)

Here are some fantastic real looking textures!

Yes, I LOVE Stephy's stuff. I have quite a few of them and Gaia is on the list of textures to use in the renders. I should check out her others though. 8-)

I'm probably in the minority on this forum, but I don't really like most of the "photoreal" textures out there for one simple reason... most of them don't bother to remove the highlights and other lighting-specific characteristics of the skin from their textures. Some of you might find this good, but really it limits the texture's uses. WHen highlights and specularity are in the texture already, then it's really only good for certain lighting situations, and almost useless for animation. I prefer most of the textures DAZ offers (including vicki hires), and some ethnic ones like Egypt and the new "Maya" texture for S3P, where they remove the highlights on the skin to increase the texture's usability under most lighting situations. The texture doesn't look "photoreal" out of the box, but once you render it with your own specularity and bump settings, it's really much more photoreal than those that look like a photo was just pasted on to the texture map.

My (non-Caucasian) favorites: Dalinese - Brown Sugar (and there's a Mike version, too.) Morris - Zena Quim - Zulu Quim - Polynesian Man Cin- - Dok Mai Morris - Kimimela Morris/Stacey73 - Zahra I'd love to hear of more, especially Asian textures!

I don't know if you're a member of Poserstyle, but they have a gorgeous "Heiata" texture for V1/2 that is based on a Tahitian woman I believe. Unfortunately the link's down at the moment, but it'll probably be back up tomorrow.

I'm a big fan of Morris' ethnic textures, and I think her "Miss April" pack has a definite Asian flair to it.

Also check out Dalinise's "Flowers of the Orient" if you're looking for Asian textures, I don't have it but it looks excellent as of all Dalinise's products are. :) She also has a set at DAZ called Asian Man for M1/2 that might be useful.

I just bought the new Maya texture for S3 at DAZ, and its gorgeous! I think my runtime could definitely use some multi-cultural influence, its nice to hear what other people's recommendations are!

I have to agree with the Morris textures. Hers are some of the best in my opinion, I use them quite a bit.

Ghost of Macbeth did some beautiful black skin textures for V3 that I've also use on M3. It is available at DAZ and I got to say it's a beautiful texture. Catlin

theres also saquay by goldtassel, a very beautiful native american texture!

In the words of DarkStarRising:

Darkness within darkness,
a shadow of a form lays upon the floor,
looking at herself
looking at her own shadows of loneliness"

I do like Dalinese's African textures, and recommended the "Brown Sugar" package above, but watching Condi Rice raise her right hand to swear to tell the truth yesterday reminded me of something...every person of African descent that I've ever met has had pale palms and soles. No matter how dark their skin is, their palms and soles are light. (See attached pic of Shaquille O'Neal and friend for an example.) Dalinese's textures, including the new V3 one DAZ, have dark palms and soles. But this is a pretty common flaw. Maybe artists just darken light textures, so everything ends up darker?

DCArt ( ) posted Fri, 09 April 2004 at 6:45 AM

I've also noticed that trait, Randy, which is why I mentioned that tinting doesn't always get accurate results. I suppose it is hard to get textures to look that way, though. I want to thank everyone for their recommendations. There are definitely some gorgeous textures that I never noticed before. I got a couple of them, and have more on my wish list. This was a fun project. Thanks everyone! 8-)
