Subject: Mat Pose edit, looking for tutorial on making thumbnails please

Well I finally got it, silly how I bought the one here and I understand the free on better lol anyway, the only problem I have now is learning to make thumbnails. WHen I click on the link provided at the mat pose edit site the page doesn't come up. I've even tried refreshing it Does anyone know where I can find a tutorial on how to make a thumbnail file for my mat pose edit files? thanks so much! --Essie

hi essie, I don't know of a tutorial, but I can outline the steps for you. This is the way I do it (although there are a dozen other ways to make thumbs) 1. Using a square document window (any size) and open the figure/prop you want to use. 2. Apply the textures and render in a new window. Save the render* then either use a new document, or move the camera away from the figure to show a blank screen (or use another camera view). * If you want to add text to your MAT thumbs, save the render as a .psd file and add the text in a graphics app. 3. Import the render as a background image (alt-f-i-b). Open any camera library and add the scene to it. 4. In windows explorer, rename the camera .rsr to match your MAT file, delete the .cm2 file and move the .rsr to the same folder as the MAT file. As I said, there are other ways to do it. Some people render at 91 x 91 and convert the render to .rsr using Poser Explorer, but I frequently add text, so I find this way much easier. And it's easier to do than to explain. mac

This method doesn`t work with propack and so probably not with poser 5 either.

well that bites lol I'm running p5 anyone else have any other ideas, tutorials? please thanks---Essie

I make a ton of MATS, I find the simple solution to be the best in this case: 1. Copy all the MAT PZ2 files to another folder. 2. Figure what would show the MAT best, frame it the normal way in Poser (it helps if your document window is square, you will then get-what-you-see (WYSIWYG)). If you really must have text bring it in as a prop, or background. 3. Make a Pose using the exact MAT name (it will overwrite the MAT, of course) 4. Copy the actual MATS back into the Pose folder, overwriting the Pose again, leaving the thumb, though. I must admit some people find this solution not complicated enough, they can also add: 5. Make a 126,464 polygon mesh model of the Battleship Warspite in her 1944 version. 6. Texture the ship with 12,421 different materials 7. Delete the model. ;-)

It helps to know if you have Poser 4 or Poser 5. If you have Poser 5, this is the simplest approach: 1.) Resize your document window to 91x91 2.) Render your image 3.) Save as png into the proper folder that has your MAT files. Bingo, you're done! Poser 4 is more complicated since Poser 4 doesn't save in PNG format. Poser 4 uses "rsr" files for thumbnails.

I resize my document to 100x100 and do what Bobbie Boucher does. If you don't need the bump file or transparency effects, you can turn off the camera name and just export the image if you have it in smooth shader view. A word of caution, the .png file must be EXACTLY the same name as the pose, but be careful not to overwrite your pose file.

xanor, I'm interested to know why my method wouldn't work with PP/P5. I can't think of any reason offhand why it shouldn't. Other than the fact that the .rsr is a .png, but that's hardly a problem. mac

Actually it's better to include the rsr's than the png's (or both) since Poser Pro Pack and Poser 5 will convert the rsr into a png when it first encounter it. Some people have reported problems when both a png and an rsr are initially present, I don't know what should cause the problems, I just say what I've heard. From that day I stopped putting png's in my zips and only put the rsr's there. I make the rsr's from png's with P3DOExplorer (be sure to download the newest RSR2PNG plugin or the alpha channel can be reversed) The only problem I can think of with only rsr's present is if you want to use the file in Daz|Studio BEFORE Poser has made the png, since D|S doesn't read rsr's. (at least it didn't last time I looked) I too make my thumbnails by rendering a 91x91 image then save it as a png. Won't 100x100 cause problems in Poser 4? I know Pro Pack and Poser 5 are more forgiving about "too large" thumbs, but I doubt you can convert anything but a 91x91 with P3DOExplorer.

'since D|S doesn't read rsr's' That's odd, ernyoka, because when I tried DS, it showed all my poser 4 content, thumbs and all. All .rsrs, of course. I have P5, but I only use it occasionally, and I delete the .pngs after use. (Don't ask me why. It's a long story. Let's just say they annoy me) All my stuff goes on sale with .rsrs only. Just to be safe. mac
