Subject: April Challange WIP: 3 laws of Asimov -> need ideas and comments

Your probably familiar with Asimov's 3 laws of robotics: 1)A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2)A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3)A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. Well the robot in this image decided to take a hike without braking any of these laws. I'm finished with the modelling (Wings3D used for robot, buildings and aircrafts) and have begun working with the details on the building and in the jungle (for example some palms/trees look like crap). Before I dig too deep into it I would like some comments and ideas (and maybe references to jungle images). thanks!!

I Robot was one of the first Asimov books I read. Great writer. Aren't they making a movie of it? I was never sure about the inaction law. How can a robot walk past a hospital without going in to save a life? Surely that's inaction? ;-) Really good image. I like the organic/cyber mix.

Excellent job so far Bazze, what about some small running lights on the speeders and some contrail? - they're about the only things I'd change!

Drawbridge: Interesting point. But those in hospital (Hopefully)are already in a life-saving situation. If the robot entered the hospital it would surely be instructed to leave after being informed that unless it had the appropriate skills/programs it presence was not required. Asimov is grossly under-rated. I believe he should be regarded as a modern day prophet. Didn't he put forward the notion of Satellite communications, laptop computers and mobile phones decades before they became part of our eveyday life? Bazze: Great idea!

Bryster, by that argument we need to turn HG Wells into a prophet as well. Maybe they could be saints of the Jedi religion? :-)

I think Arthur C Clark came up with the idea for satellite comms. Not sure about laptops etc though. Wouldn't surprise me if it was Asimov.

Not into sci-fi, Asimov, Clarke or Wells but I would like to know, top right quandrant, what are those blue blobs? Holes in the 2D background picture? Bye now..........Dennis

drawbridgep ( ) posted Wed, 14 April 2004 at 8:37 AM

They are Speeders from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. But I think we're glossing over the important point... Not into Sci-Fi!!! What planet are you on? Oh, Earth I guess. ;-)

Dennisld -> yes those are speeders. You can take a look at the speeders in detail here. I'll have to do something with them so you can see that those are flying objects. 2D background picture? No I haven't used one.

Hi Paul......Just goes to show don't make a comment about something you know absolutely nothing about and make yourself look a p***k!!! I thought they were hankerchiefs from a damsel in distress locked up in the futuristic castle by Arnie's dad, and doomed to float to the ground only to be caught on the fronds of a palm tree and eaten by Arnie's mechanical pet parrot who doubles for a dustbin, it's a clean picture........ o.k. I'm going...bye now....Dennis

Asimov is the reason that the mechanical gloves with which one can handle radioactive or biological material at a distance are called "waldos". I'm not sure about the other things mentioned. If you love scifi, but haven't read "Waldo", one of Asimov's short novels (usually bundled with "Magic Inc.") you are missing a great story.

This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

great pic... i love the color pallette your using especially. personally i would drop the individual visible spots you have. im a volum fReAk and i think its destracting, it looks to contrived.

HAH? I thought Waldos came from Heinlein (Waldo and Magic)..but I could be mistaken..read lot's of Asimov (Coruscant is a copy of his Trantor from the Foundation series..;) sounds interesting..maybe the robot's following the 'zeroth' law (though that might be one of the foundation spinoffs..I'd have to look..;)

uhm...so...we've had quite a few randomly irrelevant and just generally strange posts in here...to get it back on track: Maybe add some exhaust to the speeders...maybe a little motion blur... Less volumetrics, i think, they take too much attention off of the robot (which is presumably the focus of the image) and also look rather staged. Excellent start, i look forward to seeing further wips.

tjohn ( ) posted Wed, 14 April 2004 at 7:07 PM

Yep, pakled, sorry. Some brain cells are beginning to meld at my advanced age (50). Asimov and Heinlein are merging into a single memory, LOL. Lucky I didn't attribute Waldo to Bradbury. Where the heck is Waldo, anyway? :^)

hey guys, thanks for all comments. I did't get to read them all before I did this next WIP. Changes made: * Scene re-rendered with a faint light source just above the surface but under the palms. This makes the details _under_ the palms come through. * Changed the sky - More clouds / dramatic sky * Exhaust trails added to speeders * Added a couple of more lianas hung from the palms * Added more foilage that hangs down from the lianas and palms * Added a texture on the palm trunk in the middle * Added the pile of junk in the foreground (lower right sq) Ideas: * A bunch of birds in the sky maybe? * Tone down light rays maybe. * Not sure about the stuff in the foreground. Twisted Symmetry -> What do you mean with individual visible spots?

This is excellent it has a real classic sci fi feel, remniscent of the asimov or philip k dick book covers of the 70s / 80s.

Jaymonjay ( ) posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 11:39 AM

Very nice! I think I'd lose the stuff in the foreground though, as it draws attention away from your excellent robot. Aside from that, this is just about perfect. :)

bazze ( ) posted Fri, 16 April 2004 at 3:24 AM

thanks for the great comments! The things I'm going to do next are: 1) Change the texutures on the building. More dirt/rust/detail! 2) Add a bunch of birs taking off from the trees

Heinlein did some great books, I still feel the film version of starship troopers was an insult. The only vague connections were some names and the bad guys being 'bugs' :-(
