Subject: What to model . . .

airlynx ( ) posted Tue, 13 April 2004 at 3:15 PM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 3:49 AM

Okay, I'm in a bit of a dry spell. I haven't modeled anything in a long time, and I want to get back into it, but I have no idea what to model. I have a CAD program that I use for most of my modeling (it can export almost anything) and was looking for ideas. If you give me some good suggestions I will post my results in the freestuff gallery. Keep in mind I'm using a CAD program so organic shapes are rather hard to do, but I'm looking for a good challenge with a lot of detail.

Hi, we use AutoCAD, so we know what you mean about organic...LOL...anyway, we are doing another big project so I don't have time to make this, but what about the Ifel tower, of a really nice light house, with details etc., or a French Cafe building with tables and chairs in the front...I am still thinking....I am Sharen of www.sams3d.com if you need to get in touch with us about anything....I am on my way to your area...Sharen

I like your ships too.....very nice. How about a real nice ship, or furniture for the outside, you know spring is coming. Sharen

A Triumph or a Moto Guzzi motorcycle? . . . or a ship . . . maybe even the XF-01 Enterprise starship . . . automotive tools . . . The U.S.S. Constitution, The Empire State building, Eifel(sp) Tower, a gismo that practicalyy is impractical, a water tower - the one downtown in Freso is kind of neat . . . I dunno - sort of in a dry spell too.

A hang-glider. Never been done that I have found on the net.

The ship in my gallery is a quaternion fractal, I didn't actually model that. All I did for that was to plug in a formula. The buildings are a nice idea, working as a CAD designer I was trained to think small, buildings are large, didn't think of that. I've thought of furniture, but I have no imagination for it. Give me a couple weeks and I'll have a few things I guarantee. Probably post them in the bryce forum since thats what I use for rendering.

Hey shonner, I already did..;) and someone else did, a bit later, much better than mine..;) heck, I even made the ship that went with it..3ds if ya want it..;) or are you pulling our leg?..;)
I need to make a piano and clavinet for the next (well, long term project..;) pic. Anyone want to make a .3ds or .dxf drum set (need Carl Palmer's, and you'd have to be of an age to know who I'm talking about..;) Make whatever you like..I get a lot of ideas from TV..but that's me..;)

You're drone was what got me interested in doing one. Plus the fact that there aren't many renders of the thing on the net (compared to R2-D2 renders found).

renders? oh..now if you're talking screencaps and pictures, there's pages of them with a Google search..glad I could start the ball rolling..;)

I'm talking 3D renders. I have plenty of movie pics and two different DVD's.

I'd love to have the lil robot. I'm a huge fan of the movie. I have the opposite problem. I have a huge file of photos of things I want to model, and I either can't find the time or don't yet know how to do it. I'd still like to see someone model a really really good single rose.

All the small NASA solar system probes are linked to this discovery page. It's sort of the new version of the grand tour. Every mission has an education section with paper models of the probes you can print and fold together. You have good photos plus the basic shape with textures of the satellites. It would take very little to do these in a 3d program and add the bulges, tanks, and jets where they go. The site might even be willing to host your model when you are done.

airlynx, whenever I get stuck for something to model I just wander through my house & pick something at ramdom then try & recreate it in lightwave numanoid, I've had a free hang glider & parasail up in Poser freestuff at 3D Commune for at least the last couple of years :-)
