Subject: Graphics card just took a nose-dive

At least I think it did. Was working on my other machine just a few minutes ago when the screen suddenly went black. The system didn't shut down or reboot, but the monitor was as if it had shut off, yet it was still on. The monitor in question is a ViewSonic 19inch LCD (almost new), so I don't think it's the monitor. Sound like a graphics card failure to anyone else? I've tested all power sources and wires to that system are fine. The computer seems to boot up, but the monitor remains black.

Tools :  3dsmax 2015, Daz Studio 4.6, PoserPro 2012, Blender v2.74

System: Pentium QuadCore i7, under Win 8, GeForce GTX 780 / 2GB GPU.

Could possibly be a battery, I know that on the Mac if the clock backup battery dies the screen will also go blank, not sure about PC's. If possible try your card in the other computer. if it;s monitor is blank then it;s the card . The other thing is also try the monitor on the other machine as well. Try one item at a time to eliminate the possibilities:-) Hope this helps.

Yep, thanks. I'm going to do that now. Hoping I don't have to head out and buy a new monitor, but I'm fairly confident it will end up being the card. :-( Thanks for the reply.

Maxx, when you boot up your system how many beeps do you hear?

Ask me a question, and I'll give you an answer.

I had this happen to me a few times last year. For some reason, my graphics card kept working itself free of its AGP slot.

I still suspect poltergeists.

If you do need a replacement card, Nvidia unveiled its Geforce6 series earlier this week, and the new technology looks very impressive; the Geforce 6800 should be in stores by June. Not that it'll have much performance impact on Posers 4-5, of course, but there's more to life than Poser.

Cows, for instance.

  1. reseat the card. 2)don't assume it's not the monitor. If you unplug the video cable there is usually a dispay about missing input on the display.
