Well I know I can't keep up with the modellers around here, but I want to do something, right? So I jump on one of Honda's early humanoid bots - second-hand, low miles, one owner, and the price is right (free to a good home) the hitch is that there's some assembly required, and of course the instructions are in Japanese...

Not to mention objects with four vertices - what's up with that? Does the fourth mark its place in space-time? Bryce doesn't like a fourth vertice... shuts right down.

I think you are confused as to what a vertex is. Unless it has another meaning that I am not aware of a vertex is a point on a mesh, or more in general a single point (corner) on any geometric figure, for instance a triangle has three verticies.

Confused is a label I wear well.

My leap of faulty reasoning is based on the following:

Import to Bryce = immediate Bryce shutdown

Import to LightWave is okay.

Export from LW to 3DS = 3DS Export: Operation Failed - Code 1 3DS Export: Polygons with three vertices only.

Export from LW to DXF = DXF Export: Operation Failed DXF Export: Polygons with > 4 vertices not supported.

The export from LW to wavefront obj was okay and Bryce didn't choke on it.

Ahh okay, what you need to do is triangulate your model. It means that the program does not support quads (squares, 4 vertices), and needs to have triangular polygons (triangles, 3 verticies).

If you need help with the japanese let me know, my girlfriend can understand a bit of japanese B-) Cool model so far :) looking forward to seeing it when it's all done. As for the triangular and quad surfaces, I usually prefer modelling with quads. you might want to keep a quad version too for when you're modelling and then later triangulate when exporting for use in bryce.

hey stupid question... isn't it that when you triangulate ur quads u get a more complex model? is it not right that it actually multipliesm the poly count by two? just checking

yeah, every guad will get split up into 2 triangular poligons, so the poly count will double.

i must need to replace the batteries on my universal transalator all i'm getting here is technobabble... maybe i should read the manual again. good work though, i'll buy one, does it come with an MOT and road tax.

Here's the upper body. I've started working from the ground up now and have got the legs together too but I'm a little stuck on the hip articulation.

some assembly required..;) as for the immediate shutdown part, aren't there more than one Lightwave version, and don't the later ones act up in Bryce? seems I saw that in a thread somewhere. Maybe if you have the option to save as an earlier version..who knows..;)

I've become accustomed to current LW version saves just throwing me a failure error in Bryce upon import (and then you go back and save as...) This didn't give any indication of being tied to that. I've never had it just shutdown on me like this before.

I think Blog got a lil mixed up ddruckenmiller...according to your error messages, the program DOES NOT like tris (3 sided polys) nor does it like ngons (or polys with more than 4 sides). You ALMOST ALWAYS want to maintain quads when modeling however, importing it into 3dmax which usually has no probs with "non-quads", you shouldnt get that error message...but who knows good lookin model thus far

I model in Wings (quad modeller), and have never experienced problems when importing OBJs into Bryce - even OBJs with polys with 7 or 8 vertices.

That would be so that so that you get the materials tuned to your intended setup from the get go and you don't end up having to go back through the whole thing to tweak it piece by piece later. Render and learn...

@EYECON - Triangulating doesn't automatically give you more detail, it just bisects quads into triangles.
