Subject: 6 hours wasted - I need a Vue expert

BillyGoat ( ) posted Thu, 22 April 2004 at 9:38 PM · edited Mon, 18 November 2024 at 1:32 AM

I've never had this problem before. Can't figure out how it all works now :-( I'm landscaping a house. The house is not in a layer - it stands alone with all it's 'groups' ( on top with the camera, etc.) I've added plants and trees in seperate layers. Spent hours getting them perfectly placed. I moved the camera around the scene, and when I did all the plants/trees 'lost' their positions. So I moved the house, thinking they are a part of it and really messed it all up... Now I need to start all over. I move my scenes all the time, in a circle, or left/right, etc. Never had to reposition anything. I've done nothing different this time. What am I doing wrong? It has 4 sides, and each side needs landscaping... i've gone brain dead. BillyGoat (bangs head on desk)

Can you post a screenshot of your scene set up ? That could help with finding out what is wrong.

I would if I hadn't deleted it... I didn't save with new names along the way. All I really need to know is when I turn the scene in the top view, shouldn't everything 'go with it'? The exact example is I created a row of 12 bushes along 1 side of the house. When I turned the scene using the trackball the bushes stayed put - they didn't move with the house... the bushes were off by a few inches, and I couldn't get the exact placement back... Locking the layers didn't mess it up, did it? I really appreciate your help agiel.

Are you using Vue 4 or Vue Pro ? Locking layers should not mess up their content. I haven't heard of that kind of issue before. Can you try to reproduce the problem and then take a screenshot ? (like before and after rotation of the scene) One thing that comes to mind when you rotate a scene is to make sure the pivot of all objects is set to the center of each object (position x=0 y=0 z=0). If some objects are 'off center', they will rotate around different axes.

Do you have the camera linked to the geometry(or visa versa)? Look in the 3rd tab over when you select the camera (links tab). Its a good idea to make a layer for groups and objects BTW. Bot

Thanks Robot17... I don't have the camera linked - never needed to try it. I do put my groups in layers. I'm using a lot of alpha planes to save on polys. What is strange is that 1 group of 12 alphas stayed put and moved with the scene. It's the outer objects (on the 'edges' of the property) that moved when I rotated the scene using the rotate in the main view window (the 4 pane window). It's easier/faster for me to rotate the scene than to mess with the camera. I'm using Vue 4. I've worked on hundreds of scenes and never had this problem. I must be overlooking something very simple. This is a very special project, and it's got to be perfect.

Pivot of objects are at zero...

Better put some screen shots up wih the problem like Agiel says. Its a little hard to tell what may be going on because I usually don't do things that way. Are you sure you had all of the objects selected when you moved the scene? You might try a dummy object such as a sphere and link everything to that object. When you want to move the scene without the camera, move the dummy instead. To unlink, delete the dummy. Bot

No, I didn't have all the objects selected... hmmmmm. I've never had to do that. Do I need to link all the landscape items to the house? I've been playing in Vue over 2 years - haven't changed my way of doing things at all. Only a few objects didn't move with the house. 80% of the objects did.

BillyGoat ( ) posted Fri, 23 April 2004 at 12:46 PM

My aim is when it's all finished is to slowly rotate it so the viewer can see all sides. Do I need to group everything to the house? It doesn't seem efficient that way. Sorry to be such an idiot... I've not had this problem with any other houses (i.e. real house 1 & 2). Thanks everyone for your patience, LOL!

Somehow I got the impression you were moving the objects - not the camera. Check your animation timeline to see if you've accidently animated the offending objects. Sometimes I'll forget that when I'm animating and I'll be in the wrong place in the timeline. For objects there's also a creation time - that is hen you create it in the animation timeline say half way through, the keyframe is offset from the keyframes of other objects created earlier or later. Rather move the camera, NOT the scene... If you really MUST turn the complete scene, then save before doing so, group ALL objects to ONE group, then try turning that, good luck vue is not crashing, save before doing so... I always rather turn the camera itself, with the mover wizard you can easily make it go around the house...

Thanks for the tip! I'm starting all over for the 6th time. I find the camera clumsy. I'm not too good at positioning it at all. I've also had to scale up the model as the objects i'm adding lose their detail when I resize them down to fit. And I thought this was going to be so easy...
