Subject: Emails on all new posts?

rcook ( ) posted Thu, 05 October 2000 at 2:44 PM · edited Fri, 26 July 2024 at 12:55 AM

I've had some people complain about not receive emails on new posts, and did some digging in the code. The way that works now, is when a new post is made to a forum where you have email notification turned on, you are sent an email. If another new post (not a reply) is made, you are not sent another email until you visit the forum and hit the "Mark All Read" link. I could change this to notify on every new post (not replies) if you have email notification turned on, but it will mean more emails to your box. What do you think?

Personnaly I would like to receive as many email notifications as possible. Because I tend not to go back to forum posts (or gallery images) on my own free will just to check if anyone replied. So I don't mind getting more email from posts/replies. It just makes it a whole lot easier to know when someone has posted something. I tend to hit all of my ebots to see what was happening, then delete the ebots after I'v read the days posts. More ebots would just give me a bit more browsing time, which has it's ggod and bad points. And a few more ebots to kill, which is a non problem. Over all I like the idea. When the "war" was going on, I found myself posting in a lot of threads that I would normally have read and left uncommented, just so I could keep up to date on all of the arguments. It worked, but it made me a lot more visible than I cared for, in the situation... Not that a few flames generally bug me. I find that I miss a lot of stuff from the Bryce forum because it gets buried under new posts before I can get to it. When we get more traffic, the same will happen at hardware and technical. This idea would eliminate missing interesting bryce posts or important questions that may be driving someone nutz. (Hardware probs can do that in a hurry) Would unclicking the "email on post" still disable recieving ebots from that particular forum? That would work for turning off the ones you dont need.

Ironbear, yes. If I made "ebot" mail on all new posts, it would be according to the "Email me on new post" setting. Turn it off, and you get no emails. Turn it on, you get one email for each NEW post, not replies. Now, once you've marked things read, you'd get an email for a reply as well, just like happens now.

Works for me... Meanwhile, I'm heading for more and stronger coffee. Want some? I've got a morning show to finish... Is there anything new with the "render war" forum btw?

I kinda likes the "Render Wars" forum idea. If you guys want a new place to duke it out, I'll be happy to add a back room onto the Tavern with lots more wall space for the posters.

That would work... We have a thread in there somewher (Buried under the posters, heh heh) where NegMan brought up the idea. Or someone did... and he spoke on it. Long as we don't smash the Jamesons whilst cutting through the wall, I'm ok. Gots to have my Irish coffee to start my heart ever evening.

Ok. I'll take care of it. Spread the word. The tavern shall be neutral ground once again.

Cool... We may have to stand TIO in the dreaded "Corner of Time Out" a few times 'till he gets the ideer, but hey, he'll live. (Nice guy, but a bit slooow, y'know? snicker) Gee, I'm mean... Hope he doesn't see that. I'll put the notice and link in this mornings post if I ever finish it. Man, real content, whoda thunk it! Have a Thermal mug of 'Spresso Roast from Wizzards stash on me... I'll have Guido top it off before he drops back in.

Whoops. Almost forgot... Let me/us get the word around then we can move the previous render wars to the (drumroll) "Appropriate Forum". Get em all conveniently located for easy disposal of the other participants, heh heh.
