How does one achieve a reflection effect like in this picture?

neilp ( ) posted Thu, 06 May 2004 at 4:05 PM

That would depend on your poser version. Do you own Poser 5?

Cyhiraeth ( ) posted Thu, 06 May 2004 at 4:34 PM

Nope, 4 pro pack ;-)

In some cases, the right highlight is on the texturemap. This eye is rendered in Pro Pack.

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

Yeah, that's what I'm looking to figure out how to do. Is it a filter of some sort? I have Photoshop 7 and Paint Shop Pro 8.

Nix that in #3, I just broke down and bought Poser 5, downloading as we speak. So, I 'spose there is some kind of node thingy that can do that? ;-)

Hi, you can do this will almost any picture, you looking for things like open windows, doors, maybe outside the garden something that would reflect on the eyes. First convert the image to greayscale in photoshop, then open the eye texture you would like to modify, copy the greyescale image and paste it to the eye texture as a new layer, set this new layer to screen, soft light works good as well but it darkens the image a little then just move the overlaying image to what you want to reflect in the iris by moving. transforming and rotating. then merge all layers and you are done. Another way would be using the b/w texture as a transparency map on the cornea materials on your figure. I was working on these just yesterday they are for any Daz ver. 3 figure and I can send them to you if you like. if you don't want them for any of the daz figures you can still use the textures by following the steps I said above for any other figure. I hope this helps, I will relese this new reflections on freestuff soon I need to finish a few things first.

Oh, yes, that would be great! This is just what I was looking for!

Cyhiraeth ( ) posted Fri, 07 May 2004 at 12:03 AM

I'm trying your technique, and although I am close, it just doesn't look right. Are you making the b/w reflection image round to match the eye? Are you using a picture of a complete room with an open window in it?

I do use rounded images, I render these on Cinema $d and do everything else on photoshop. Here is one example, I used this texture for Refl05 above. I render at a higher resolution of course that way the reflection is not too distorted, play with this one for a little.

I meant Cinema 4D :)

...and for some good general knowledge about reflection maps and how they work, go to Traveler's Morphworld3.0 and check out the tut. You'll probably want to put reflections on everything and the chrome caboose once you figure them out. :) A fellow fantasy artist painted a chrome cheshire cat lounging atop a road sign. He thought it would be way cool to paint the dashed yellow median lines on the cat's claws. THEN he realized that he needed to paint those yellow strips on evry last curve and worble and tooth of the entire cat! Not fun. We have it easier now. Carolly

Thanks, Carolly, I will check this out.
