Subject: Default to Carrara and Icon

I unistalled Carrara 1.1 after installed Carrara 3. The windows lost the reference for Car files to C3. I tried to re-install Carrara 3 several times still no luck. If you know how to make CAR files default to Carrara EXE please kindly post how to do it. Thanks

I assume you are running Windows. There are a couple of ways to go about it. Try this first, double click on a Carrara file. When Windows says it doesnt know what to open it with, it will ask you what you want to open it with. Hit the browse key if necessary. Then browse to the Eovia folder and find the Carrara Exe. Select it, then also check the box that says always use this program for these file types. However, it sounds as if something is amiss with the registry. So the above procedure should work, but for a better solution you might try uninstalling Carrara. Then search the registry and look for all entries for Carrara and Eovia. Delete all these entries then reboot. Then reinstall Carrara and it should work fine. Please keep in mind the usual warnings when working with the registry. Deleting the wrong thing in the registry "can" screw your computer up. However, if you only delete the keys that are related to Eovia or Carrara it shouldnt be a problem. So if everything seems to work fine after doing the first suggestion you might not want to try the second, but as long as you are careful it shouldnt be a problem. Hope this helps. Donnie

Right click on a .car file and choose "open with" next choose Carrara from the list. If it's not listed then click the browse button and locate your Carrara.exe, next check the box "always use this program to open these files" and your done.

Eovia recommends un-installing Carrara before installing newer versions of it.

You quoted, "Eovia recommends un-installing Carrara before installing newer versions of it." I do not recall this recommendation at all. I own almost every version of RD and Car. I was excited to install Carrara 3 and never saw this recommendation. Where did you find this recommendation?

Their readme files from their updates. And from http://www.eovia.com/download/features_car304.jsp which normally states: "We recommend that you do a complete reinstall of the Carrara Studio software before installing the update." Some people have had luck with having two different installs of Carrara on their systems. In my experience, a complete re-install involves un-installing an app first before installing it again and applying the latest patch.
