Subject: Model Request: '63 Corvette

DrDigital ( ) posted Wed, 12 May 2004 at 1:51 PM ยท edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 8:43 AM

Anyone know where I can find this model? I can't seem to find it anywhere. My dad is building a 63 vette race car, and I'd like to get a 3d model of one to try out various paint schemes. 63-67 would be ok due to the similar body style, but I would prefer the 63 because it has the rear split window. I really just need the body, not all interior, wheels etc. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Try posting this question over at the Rhino forum. They have a whole slew of Car Buff there.

*Thinks about whether or not he has enough free time...* *Looks to see if there's a decent model...* *Looks at another blueprint he found* *Looks again for the model...* *Looks at blueprint...* Aaaaaahhhhhggg... I give in! *Whips out the handy-dandy Wings3D program.* Well this is a start at least. Needs some tweaking, a smooth, and some more tweaking before details can be added. Think something like this could work?

That is awesome Paul!
Something like this will work great :)
I'll have to check out that Wings3D program.

Could you make more of a body line from the tip of the nose to the top of the front wheel well, to the top of the rear wheel, and on to the rear end. This line also needs to go outward a bit. (Make sense?) I suppose the rear "split window" would be kinda tough... It'll also have a spoiler and hood scoop

What formats can you save this in? I'll probably use Photoshop to map
and Bryce to render in... thanks so much!

It will look something like these...
black body with paint scheme/logo

v3.jpg

Please pardon my scribbles on your work

Aaahhh... Top fuel series funny car, huh? Didn't equate that with "race car" (because some people race ol' classics SCCA touring style.) I suppose I could make the necessary changes. Now it'll have to evolve into two models. :) Scoop cowling? Or a hole to show off a big motor? (If you go for option two, don't expect much detail on the engine unless you can provide your own model of it.)

Well, not quite Top Fuel Funny Car... probably Top Comp (6 second) class. It will have a hood scoop, most likely like one of those pictured... don't get too crazy, I don't want you to put too much time into it. The wing can be made easily in Bryce.

I D/L'd Wings3D... pretty cool free 3d app!! Took me a little while to get used to... made a few interesting objects...
*I'm thinking all the while, how in the world did he make that model?! D'oh, thats right, you used a blueprint. How does that work, trace the side view, extrude, then add the front and rear??

Is this getting closer?

Woo Hoo !! Its Bee-u-ti-ful!! You could either: A. Call it quits now, or B. couple tweaks for me... (these may or may not work, use your judgement) 1. Move the lower edge of windshield forward toward scoop 2. Move the front fender shoulder up a bit 3. Pull the point of the nose out, maybe a little lip 4. A little shallower on these please... not quite so deep let me find an e-mail for you to send it to... how big is the .wings file? Thank you, thank you again

pauljs75 ( ) posted Fri, 14 May 2004 at 1:38 AM

As it is unsmoothed the polygon count is 1790. The .wings file was approching 1MB but that's because I forgot about the hidden reference images. By removing those, I was able to cut the file size down to 73KB. Do you want me to work out the details, or should I send it to you as is? (Couldn't hurt to get some practice/learning in Wings3D.) Email filesize isn't a problem. Anything under 1MB can go through my hotmail account ok, and anything bigger than that goes through my spymac account.

I just sent you an IM with my email address... send that hot rod my way, yes please!! Just finished your "wheel tutorial", and that is a pic of the result. Not bad for a wings3D newbie like me... well thanks to the good tut anyway. Thanks again for all your help

Cool car model pauljs75! I'm glad you could help DrDigital out with this.

pauljs75 ( ) posted Sun, 16 May 2004 at 3:23 PM

Yeah. I wonder what DrDigital has done with it. I haven't heard since I sent the .wings file. Any luck in adjusting/modifying it? Or should I put some more work into the one I have here?

Sorry for the slow response, I work a lot on weekends. I must say that this has been the most fun I've had learning a 3d program in a long time. Thanks Paul.

Things done:

  • nose tip/skirt
  • fleshed out front fenders
  • stretched back the scoop
  • cut out windows/interior
  • 5-6 hours of various experiments on different saves.

Things to do:

  • bumpers
  • running lights
  • interior

If you feel like demonstrating your mad skills, by all means please do. Teach a newbie a few things about modelling/wings.
