Subject: need help importing into bryce

Hi, I hope someone here can help me. I have a file in AI that I need to be able to bring into bryce and extrude it. I think I remember doing something similar a few years ago but I can't seem to get it to work. Could someone either tell me how to do it or take my eps and make it into something that I can bring into bryce? Thanks in advance.

I wonder which way you want to extrude it. If it's just upward, you can use the terrain editor. What formats can you convert eps to? Could you post a screenshot of the AI file, I'm sure lots of people will have suggestions :)

You'll need to convert the vector graphic to a bitmap image with a canvas size set to one Bryce's base 8 terrain sizes - at least 512x512 or 1024x1024. I use Photoshop to convert to .TIFF - anything works except for compressed formats like JPEG (well, they work but not too well). Then you just need to open Bryce's Terrain Editor and load the image with the Pict button. What I think might work better is to Export the file From AI to the AI8 format and try loading it into the free Wings modeler (link), do a extursion there and then export to .OBJ for Bryce. The problem with terrains is that they can't do a true vertical and the file size can be huge. To be honest I've never tried loading any Illustrator files in Wings but it's listed as a supported format. HTH; Dan

Trying to understand what you need. Is it something like this? The edges are messy because the image in the post above is very small, so the edges were a bit pixel-ish.

there's a freebie that just came out called 'tiffer'..don't know if it would help, but it might..bikermouse did it.

I ended up using the wings program that Dan mentioned and it worked pretty good.

Hey!! I never noticed that Wings imported AI8 files - you learn something new and valuable every day on this forum!!!! :)

Just save your AI as a TIF or JPG and then import into Bryce Terrain Editor. Invert it, though, cause black is the smallest and white the greatest height value. Or you might try with copying it to clipboard and then pasting it into Terrain editor. I don't know whether that would work. Might, though. Or you could try TIFFER, but since the AI's straight B&W, I don't see much point in it.

Adobe Illustrator has its own feature called Rasterize, I believe its under the Object menu, but you have to blow up the object to a fairly large size before rasterizing. From there you can copy and paste it into any image editor to save it as whatever image file desired. I would recommend Tiff or Bmp as they are lossless. But I guess Wings worked for you. I should try that sometime.
