Here is my attempt.

And here is the real thing (from the web). Re the color difference: some pictures show their uniforms as blue, some as nearly black - likely it varies. His uniform is my workman, with shin morphs to make the tucked-up ankles :: I have been poking round the CRS's web site and they call their action uniforms "salopette" (= boilersuit) and not "uniforme". I welcome all comments.

Message edited on: 05/27/2004 10:52

I made the round shield earlier and it is already in the freestuff. I made the rubber baton model today :: it can be posed flexible.

Anthony this really looks great!!! My computer crashed so I had to re install poser and I lost all the projects I was working on. I haven't forgotten the project I was doing with your space man and your other models, nor have I lost your e-mail address. it will just take me a bit more time than I had planned (argh!!!) Ken

It would have been useful to copy valuable files onto zipfiles or floppies regularly.

heh Yeah I know :0/

Quite good likeness actually Anthony ! In reality, the uniform's color is dark blue, with the CRS insigna over the right chest more than the abdomen. The material of the shield is not as transparent as you made it, and the shield is outlined by a band of black opaque material. Apart from these tiny details, yours look quite like the real thing. Oh and don't forget tear gas launchers : they make plenty use of it !

To compiler:- See here. A good large photo of a CRS man taken in good natural light without too much shadowing would be welcome here as a guide. After much searching I only found two full-length images of CRS men: one was a crowd scene only 195 pixels high; the other was the image above, which seems to have been taken underexposed in very yellow artificial light which weakened the blue component of the color, and I had to brighten it in Paintshop Pro to see the details properly. Plus two partial images which seem to show a mid-blue uniform.

Is the placing of the badge better here?

Here is the above photo brightened and with the blue strengthened in Paintshop Pro until the white parts of his badge were white.

I think its where it should be

Yes, your second one is near perfect. At the moment, the riot squads use a square shield (well, square with rounded corners). BTW, CRS are not only riot squads. They have teams of mountain rescue and civil security too. I tried to get a picture, but Google didn't bring much...

herne ( ) posted Fri, 28 May 2004 at 11:24 AM

Compiler, do they wear kepis or barets when not wearing helmets?

As here. The officers wear official hats of the usual shape with a peak. I also have found images of CRS kepis. Likely practice has varied. The CRS have also tried various sorts of riot helmets down the years, including:- (1) The visor hinges up between 2 layers if the helmet. (2) Ditto, and 2 visors, and one of the visors is some sort of one-way mirror that looks like brass from the outside.

I also found the CRS's march tune, as a file servir.mp3 , playing for 3 mins 31 seconds, but after I downloaded it the site disappeared.

The crs also serve as highway and road patrols.

But their most well know role is charging violently in any trouble maker on the street. As a student, I have been on the receiving end of one of their charges. They can break pretty much any crowd (except the firemen, which are know as quite tough themselves : this led to really big brawls last year). They are not renown for their subtelty in riot control, though... ouch...

Riddokun ( ) posted Fri, 28 May 2004 at 5:58 PM

wht not try out some "elite" french squad instead, like GIGN or RAID ?

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Sat, 29 May 2004 at 12:38 AM

I am not familiar with the GIGN or the RAID? What do they do? What words do those initials stand for? I have been on the ground in France only one day. Sorry.

Riddokun ( ) posted Sat, 29 May 2004 at 7:42 AM

I don't remember quite well for RAID, but GIGN stands for Groupe d'Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale There are two distinct (and long ago separated until a few monthes ago with the measures of security minister) groups of official laW/order defenders. the Police on a way (i think RAID are part of them) and the "gendarmery" who, contrary to police, are part of military/army (and GIGN is part of them) GIGN is an elite group of strike team/itnervention squad with variosu tasks, mainly support or main attack force against criminal organisatiosn such as drugs or bootlegers, or organised crimes and such. They have to strike fast, with very little preparation/planning in urgency RAID (fro what i recall of them) are more specialised in static/plannified assaults, especially during hostages abduction. of course my memories are not very precises and accurate but i guess some ressources can be found on internet about both. I even guess that army minister and innersecurity minister both have some information page about them, for recruiting youths...

compiler ( ) posted Sat, 29 May 2004 at 10:11 AM

They are the french counterparts of SWAT teams. In France, police forces are divided between civilians (police) and military (gendarmerie), the former in charge of the cities, while the latter have the rest of the country under their custody.
