Subject: getting/commissioning custom props?

logansfury ( ) posted Tue, 08 June 2004 at 2:28 PM · edited Tue, 04 February 2025 at 7:53 AM

Hello Everyone,

Im hoping for contact information for poser prop creators that are known for taking custom orders.

Id like to see some webpics of swords and possibly some sword illustrations ive done in the past that could be scanned to comp image, studied and replicated into custom poser props :)

Hoping this is a request seen here before, and that there are some experienced weapon prop makers that can accept a request and determine if its something they can either whip up for fun or accept payment for creating.

Can anyone suggest where or with whom I could pursue this?

Thank you very much for reading :)

Logan

Hello Geoegress,

I most certainly can post! I am looking for the largest historical version of the Zweihander sword, the full 6' version (4.5' of Flamberge blade, 1.5' of handle and Spetum blades).

What ive got for images is, 3 screenshots from the movie Excalibur to give an example of my desired weapon's proportions:

In this pic you can see two men at the battlements, the Duke, standing on our left, is holding what I would consider to be a Bastard Sword or a Two-Handed Broad Sword, of 5' length. Next to him on our right, the older knight, is holding the 6' Zweihander

In the next pic I post you can see at our right side of screen the full length of the sword when carried by the 6'4" tall knight

and finally, ill post the 2 money shots, I found a beautiful closeup of a zweihander with an awesome hilt and quillions, and a sweet flamberge blade as in the movie weapon. The pic "zweihander sword.jpg" is the original pic, in the pic "zweihander-sword.jpg" (note the hyphen in the filename) ive painted out the other sword and the dagger and most of the shadow behind the desired sword.

I hope this is sufficient detail (as opposed to gross-overkill) to give prop artists an idea what im hoping for.

Thank you to anyone that has the time to look over this request :) If the scope of this request is beyond what most artists prefer to do for free, I most certainly and completely respect and understand and ask to please give me an idea what a retail commission of this nature would entail.

Thanks again,

Logan

And finally, here is the above detail shot with the shadows and other sword and dagger clumsily painted out.

Whats the verdict artists? Is this a reasonable request?

Thanks again everyone and sorry for the images flood :(

im afraid that site has been down for some time although the freebie still shows as available in the rosity freestuff area :( figgured Id start by seeing whats involved to get a prop made with a zweihander as I couldnt get AoD's and then perhaps try to have a sword or two of my own design made :)

OK got it downloaded and grabbed the pdf manual......but lets be frank here, I can even render without coughing up a lung. Should a newbie be workin with this? Logan

Cyhiraeth ( ) posted Tue, 08 June 2004 at 8:20 PM

Absolutely, Logan! Play with the program, LEARN the commands (they are actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it) and then make your swords! If I can manage to make a few simple props and a spacesuit for Koshini, then you can certainly learn to make swords! Good luck!

Wings rocks. Pretty easy to learn, too. There's even a sword tut out there that you'll stumble into pretty easily if you look for it. Might even be in the manual. I forget. I've tried a bunch of retail modeling apps and I still can't match the modeling speed and efficiency of Wings with any of them.

logansfury nope not a reasonable request at all :-)

email me at coolerBear@att.net for a copy (scaled to approx 6' length 238K zipped pp2 format leather hilt texture included)

note this is a low rez version thrown together in a couple of hours in lightwave... only 6875 polys. With the way my schedule is currently if you want something more detailed I'll need at least a week and a lot more pictures :-) edited to correct the inevitable typos

Don't know if it's of any use to you as Cooler has already offered one, but I have this lurking on my drive in case you want a slightly different one. Somewhat higher polycount though. :)

Almost forgot, hilt detail.

pakled ( ) posted Wed, 09 June 2004 at 12:35 PM

sure..since they're low poly, it shouldn't be too hard to pick up..we have a Wings forum here, they answer questions, and can point you to more tutorials..several people (including me) have made Wings tutorials in the Tutorials section, so try them out..Draculaz' spaceship is a good place to get started..and the manual has a coupla tutorials in it as well, though I got lost towards the end (never could follow directions..;) have fun.

It looks fantastic! Maybe I can do a render with two knights fighting each other with each of these two zweihanders ill have now ;)

Thank you very very much

Hello Pakled :)

Well the Wings program hard crashes my system and makes it reboot itself. I guess it doesnt like my old vodoo 5 AGP 64M video card that cost $399.99 new.

Not to be cursed to newbiedom forever, I have just accidently tripped and fallen on my roommate's computer while holding a screwdriver and somehow dislodged his Apollo Radeon 32Meg vid card ($29.99 on pricewatch 4 months ago). In another fit of clumsiness this vid card has somehow ended up in my system (damndest thing).

Low and behold, I can now launch and run Wings. Evidently I should think hard about a series of distractions for the next time I see my buddy headed towards his computer. Actually ill probably have to buy my own radeon ASAP. Say does anyone have a spare $30 lying about?

Anyhow, headed to the tutorials!

Logan
