My modem went "poof", so I was offline for a couple days. Then work calls me out of town until today (I'm now back home) DAZ BUYS BRYCE!? Of course...they waited until I was distracted...sold it without my reading permission, lol. I'm literally getting back to Rendo right now, so I have a lot of reading, e-mails and IM's, approvals to catch up on. I'll get to everybody asap. See? Told ya Bryce would live on (in one form or another) ;oi AgentSmith

Oh yeah Baby...And they already put out a plugin that will let you import DAZ studio/Poser Models seamlessly into DazBryce5...Textures totally intact...So they say..

In otherwords, in order to import Poser files into Bryce, you have to use D|S as a converter first. Not this gal!

Yeah, I don't have the plugin as of yet, but from the mouth of another Mod who has now used it, it works great. You save your Poser file as a pz3. Import the pz3 into Daz Studio. Then export it right back out as a Bryce5 obj. It coverts the transperencies so that they automaticly load. Yes, you have to use the FREE DAZ Studio as a middle-man. AgentSmith

Corel was sitting on on a plugin SDK all this time? Man, moving an OBJ(I assume that wasn't a typo) out of Bryce will be great. Now if we could only convince DAZ to release all this plugin stuff outside the Platinum Club (which I always thought was a little elitist) that would be great! - TJ

I just tested it on S.W.A.T. outfit from free poser stuff, worked almost perfectly, one texture was not right, but it was easy to fix !!! :) BTW, AS you have message !!! :)

Agent Smith, I understood DAZ produced the plugin but my assumption is that there had to be a pre-existing SDK available for them to work off of for them to do it so quickly*, and I'm almost sure they didn't get hold of the source code/libraries etc until the sale was final. Water under the bridge I guess but it makes one wonder what else corel didn't think it was important to tell us ... about that plugin what's it cost and do you have to be a p club member to get it? is there a dlink to it? (Ya know It feels wierd talking about DAZ on the Bryce Forum and not being O.T. - this is gonna take some gettin' used to!) Kemal, yeah I tried to dl the DAZ Studio update and went down to 1.62/kbs and it finally left me hanging at 13 of 16 megs so traffic must have been pretty heavy and I starteed getting 404s which usually only happen here. Might wait a day or so to pick it up. ... *infact I recall checking this out a while back and not being able to confirm that there was a Byryce SDK but there was a premium developers membership for a K or two as I recall; they had SDKS listed for most all of their products "protected" Similar to what Adobe did with the photoshop SDK. stuff like that is really Rippin' the Tiff, but was theirs to do what they wanted with it .... then.

Thanks Tirjasdyn! I guess I can pony $20.00 up sooner or later. I had a lot more to say about P.C. and closed architecture sdks but I think I already said it in one way or another in previous posts so for now I think I'll leave it at that. I still hope for the best, - TJ

I could be wrong but I do not believe this is a Bryce plugin and therefore does not require an existing Bryce SDK. Instead, it appears to be a DAZStudio plugin- something which allows DS to export additional information to Bryce that was not easily (if at all) able to be exported previously. That's the main reason that one must go through DAZStudio rather than through Poser. The latter may eventually be possible as DAZ has given the relevant information to Curious Labs. Whether that happens or not will depend upon CL rather than DAZ. (Hope I'm not telling you what you already know.) - Jack

Ah! I'll be getting a better idea of how this all works as I discuss and read about it. Somehow that's how my mind works . . . as an example I had no idea how pgm files worked in bryce before I made tiffer; if you read back on some of my early posts on that subject you'll see how uninformed I was there and then. . . but I'll get a handle on the new plugin soon.

This sounds a bit like it may be an examlpe of what I was trying to figure out last year of how to send commands from one program to another through the windows messaging system which I realized was possible after watching a demo of one of the poser to bryce animation tools. I got as far as being able to control the mouse in bryce and do a couple of simple commands but gave up as I was hitting intellectual road blocks, some of which I've found solutions for since.

I think somehow I already knew what you'd said but in all the excitement my mind hadn't put two and 2 togeather yet. I get like that when I'm trying to understand something new.

It is a Bryce plug-in. It installs into the Bryce 5 folder.

The plug-in rewrites the obj importer in Bryce to properly read the mtl file that D/S exports. The D/S exporter puts a copy of the textures and transmaps into a subfolder where the obj is extracted to so everything is right there for Bryce to pull in.

The obj exporter in Poser doesn't include the transmap information so Bryce doesn't load those files.

The information given to CL is what would need to be included in the obj exporter in Poser 5 for Bryce to get all the proper information.

Yewston, would you mean "supercedes" rather than "rewriting" the importer? If you have information from articles from DAZ, could you be good enough to post a link? - TJ

Supercedes may be a better word or maybe overwrites. I haven't read any specific documents other than what is scattered around the DAZ forums.

When I looked in the Bryce5Plugins folder the date on the obj importer (objimport.bro) was set to 6/24/2004, the date I installed the plugin. All the other import and export files that I checked were 6/11/2001.

Sorry Don't mean to be critical of your wording O.K. so it is an actual plugin then with an extension bro that was probably developed off an existing Bryce SDH and as such grabs a file set that DAZ Studio has prepared for the plugin; DS is probably in the process of developing their own SDK too. In the right hands the SDK could be the answer to exporting from Bryce problems as well as a bunch of others. - TJ

Yewston, Thanks for your correction. It's a good thing I said "I could be wrong...". Oh well, it isn't the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last... grin. I think I was led astray when DAZ said that they are willing to give Curious Labs the necessary information so that Poser could be updated to support export to Bryce. I took this to imply that CL could create their own Bryce exporter and this in turn implied that DAZ|Studio now had its own Bryce exporter. It did not occur to me that these exports were only possible via a new Bryce importer. Like bikermouse, it didn't seem likely to me that DAZ could write a new Bryce plugin so quickly if they just received the Bryce code. This assumption seemed reasonable as over the years I have heard, from several people who should know, that the Bryce code is a particularly messy and obtuse piece of work. Whatever, this is certainly good news for Poser fans. And, despite the moans and groan from a few, I suspect it is very good news for Bryce fans also- at least this one. I was disheartened when Corel obtained Bryce and never upgraded to ver 5 as I refused to send a single penny their way. I'm quite happy with version 4 and not even certain that I need 5. But now I'll cheerfully upgrade if only to support Bryce's future with DAZ. - Jack
