Sorry about that Khai. I suppose one way to look at it is that we didn't want to leave you out grin Hope you enjoy it :) Deb

I got three emails but I couldn't open the catalogue. :(

Debbie M. ( ) posted Thu, 01 July 2004 at 6:19 PM

Hi Dialyn, I had the same thing happen to me. Do this. Click on the link, and after its finished downloading and you see the blank white page, go and open your Adobe Reader manually. You should see the catalog then. Please let me know if you continue to have any problems. Deb

Easier to rightclick on the link and "save target as" to d/l it manually. Save a lot of confusion and you can see what is happening. The catalogue looks good. However a warning of the file size may be in order especially for customers on slow internet connections.

And now I have 4. Has any one here ever hear of a "test". If people were going to buy anything they won't now becuase their annoyed at the poor deployment (yet again) of this feature. "renderosity catalog" is now added into my spam filter. I doubt the fifth one will get through.

nontroppo ( ) posted Thu, 01 July 2004 at 7:49 PM

I can't open the link. There is no "save target as" option when I right-click from the email. When I just click the link or paste it into my browser, I get a blank page. When I try to refresh, my browser just goes to my default home page. I can't get into renderosity.com either - only links that go directly to the gallery and forum. How big is it, by the way? I'm on dial-up and have to pay per MB. If it's huge I don't want to download it. Not that I seem to be able to anyway.

Debbie M. ( ) posted Thu, 01 July 2004 at 7:54 PM ยท edited Thu, 01 July 2004 at 8:08 PM

Hi nontroppo,

Try to right click on this and save target as. The file is 7.90mb. Let me know if you continue to have problems.

I got four too...but I did get it open. It looks great. Actually, in this case, easier to read than the print version (which I also got through the mail). Lots of good stuff. Thanks for the help!

Debbie M. ( ) posted Thu, 01 July 2004 at 8:09 PM

Sorry for the multiple emails. Several broadcasts were being sent out at once and I think the email server caught the hiccups. Glad I could help dialyn, and I think it came out great also :) Deb

It is very nice, but, it would be nicer if there were links to the products or to the stores of those featured. What's the point in having an "electronic catalog" if you have to go to the marketplace and search for the products?

Debbie M. ( ) posted Thu, 01 July 2004 at 8:37 PM

Hi Grey Tower, This is a suggestion that we're looking into for possible future catalogs. I'm glad you like it other than that though :) Thanks! Deb

In addition to the 4 emails, this is exactly like the printed one that came in the mail a couple weeks ago...

I use dial-up and hesitated when I saw the over 9mb file download size. Has anyone checked to see if you can get the filesize down by zipping it?? I've seen some .pdf files that compress pretty well when zipped (sometimes as much as 50% reduction). Everyone's pretty used to .zip files here so I don't think it would be a problem... ...just a thought jen

Hi jen, Actually, the zipped version of the PDF is only a few KB's smaller than the PDF unzipped version :) Dee-Marie

Please note: To view the Renderosity Catalog, you will need Adobe Reader version 5 or 6.

Um. If you send out those catalogs again, I would prefer a LINK I can right click and save target as. :) I absolutely detest having to open PDF's in a browser. If I click a link and then I get the Acrobat Reader popup... I kill the window and dump the email. I'm not waiting around while it locks up my machine. OR... make it available as a zip/sit file. It's much faster to save as and then open. And those people on dialup aren't going to thank you for it, since... if it takes forever on broadband... it takes even longer on dialup. Just a thought.

Silke ( ) posted Mon, 05 July 2004 at 6:36 AM

Ummmm...... Dee-Marie? After opening that 8mb pdf... Don't send me catalogs. Ever. :) It's a complete waste of bandwidth. (Not just mine, but yours as well.) I actually thought it would have a list of all the products in there - I couldn't have been more wrong. 16 pages of maybe - if that - 50 products? 8mb???? You would be better served to use HTML. Or send out a CSV with a list of products with clickable links and pricing and item numbers. I bet you if you did a csv export from your database listing item name, broker, item number, price, LINK - you wouldn't get an 8mb file, and every single customer would very likely love you to pieces for a list like that. (CSV = importable into any spreadsheet) Now that would be something I would LOVE to see. But not this pdf "catalog". It's not a catalog, it's an AD. And I wouldn't like to get such a list as a pdf either, btw. If you did it, then do it as something that can be imported into a spreadsheet. People would USE that, over and over. I guarantee it. As to the catalog - it is only a sample of the Rosity Merchant's products, and the PDF version of the catalog contains 100 items!

Is it an advertisement? I suppose you could call all catalogs advertisements!

When I get my Dancing Dragons catalog I know I am not going to view ALL the merchandise that the Dancing Dragon has on its web site but the catalog does reflect a good cross sample of what is available on their web site as does the Renderosity Catalog :)

Thanks again for your feedback Silke [love your nick by the way].

In my profile i SPECIFICALLY have it set to NO offers/emails promos. My email had a file size limit on it. You locked up my email for over an hour and a half,(for something i specifically did NOT request) resulting in my clients not being able to send me timely, urgent information required to complete their projects, (which are time, date sensitive projects)which really pissed them off, which really pisses me off. A little courtesy such as maybe ASKING before spamming your entire database may have been a wiser course of action. thank you for your attention and your future courtesy in this matter.

Silke ( ) posted Tue, 06 July 2004 at 6:11 AM

heheh yes but... make it HTML :) Or at least tell me in the email that it's a pdf, rather than have a link to... something I can't identify. :)

I got 4 e-mails about this catalog also. Like I said in my reply, 1 e-mail is good, 2 is bothering, 3 is annoying, and 4 is spam. Actually 1 e-mail is "spam" since I unchecked the option to receive these "offers". Why am I receiving these e-mails when I specifically decided not to? And in my opinion, the excuse of a server "hiccup" or "glitch" is getting a little tired. We can excuse this from a new site or maybe one that's testing their mail server, but not from a site that's been around for 4 or 5 years and has over 250,000 members. --John

Odds are that those sellers paid for the "privelege" of spamming everyone by being included in this "catalog."

Me, too - and I was still getting them, too. The solution was to place *@renderosity.com into my spam filter, where messages are nuked BEFORE attachments are sent. If Rosity won't play fair with their emails, to hell with them.

And in my opinion, the excuse of a server "hiccup" or "glitch" is getting a little tired.<

Yup. But what else are they going to say? That they made a mistake? Easier to blame the hardware than the humans who program and use it.

actually.. no one paid. trust me on that. no one paid to get into it at all....

OK - I trust you. It's still inexcusable to a) circumvent users' wishes regarding unsolicited email (the politically correct term for spam) and b) flood users' email boxes with multiple emailings of the same "catalog" (it's really nothing more than a sales brochure).

ClintH ( ) posted Wed, 07 July 2004 at 10:27 AM

Khai, Speaks the truth. We, Renderosity, covered 100% of the cost to create and distribute the catalog. Yes, We made a big mistake with the mailing and apologize for that. It wasnt intentional. Clint
