Subject: Dual Monitor Problems

mathman ( ) posted Wed, 14 July 2004 at 8:54 AM · edited Thu, 13 February 2025 at 7:23 AM

Hi all, My PC crashed today, and so I have set up my laptop with the existing monitor (which is still OK) in a dual monitor setup (i.e. the laptop screen is the primary monitor and my 17" monitor is the secondary). The secondary (17") monitor is the one that is my viewing monitor of choice (ie its bigger and right in front of my face). Due to functional restrictions in XP Home with dual monitors, I am unable to set this as my primary monitor. I have had a couple of problems with Poser, as follows : (1) I stretched the Poser window across the two screens, and re-arranged all the "bits" (i.e. Lights, Tools, Display Styles, Parameter Dials, viewing window) according to the way I wanted it. I also set this as the preferred state, and then closed it down. When I re-opened it, it displayed only on the laptop screen (this seems to be the default), but I wanted Poser to wake up with all of the last settings intact - including the stretching across the two screens. Can someone tell me how to fix this ? (2) When I open up Poser, the parameter dials display on the secondary monitor (i.e. 17" monitor) but the rest of the Poser window displays only on the primary monitor (i.e. the laptop screen) - as per the first problem. (3) If I drag the Poser window to the secondary monitor (the 17"), certain dialogs (e.g. the rendering progress bar) still display on the primary monitor. This is a royal pain. Any help and advice appreciated. FWIW, I am on XP Home. regards, Andrew

Mine performs in much the same way. I don't think its a Poser thing, more a "feature" of Windows.

I've seen similar issues using two monitors. (I've got XP Pro.) I think it has to do with what underlying libraries/methods/calls the application is making. I.e., applications need to explicitly ensure multiple monitor support as the OS does not autmatically make it happen. (I've found screen savers that only work on the primary monitor!) Unfortunately I think your out of luck:-(

As a programmer I can tell you that the coordinates of certain objects in any program are stored in Registry or Ini files or XML files etc. When Windows determines these coordinates it cannot compensate for the dual monitor display. ie. If I program something to start at Screen centre... which screen does windows choose... That's right, the primary one. The left edge of your primary screen is treated as position 0 therefore all the coordinates for your secondary screen are minus figues. To wrap up, it's all screwed up and there isn't a lot you can do about it... and believe me, I've tried.

I agree with neilp, but have seen some appliations (notably microsoft ones) which seem to remember the screen position on a non-primary monitor. I.e., starting up in the secondary monitor. So there must be a way, but it probably is deep in the micrsoft code structuring.

Mine opens on a single screen, then I expand it to both and use one of the UI Memory Dots to reset the GUI for the dual layout.

If you happen to have an NVidia card, there's a little program that comes with it called "NView". There's a wizard there that helps you set up for dual monitors, AND it takes over remembering where applications should appear (along with a host of other great options). It also let's you set 'profiles' that you can select when only working with one monitor, or with two. Perhaps your video card manufacturer has a similar program. Jack

I just do as Nance said. I also dumped the Content paradise and modified the Poser UI xml, so that the rooms' tabs don't get divided in the middle of the screen. But I couldn't get some windows to appear where I wanted, so the Python palette, Hierachy editor and all dialog bowes keep appearing in between my monitors...

Thanks one and all for your feedback. Nance - that's a good tip about the memory dots. Compiler - ditto about the Content Paradise. FreeJack - I do have an NVidia card with NView, so I'll look into it further ... woohoo.

wow, I didnt know about Nview, and now I finally have two different desktop images! Yay! Thanks FreeJack! Doug Sturk

I came, I rendered, I'm still broke.

... also goes to hunt for his original NView disk...

I just downloaded nview from the nvidia website. I believe that the latest version is just a few months old.

I came, I rendered, I'm still broke.
