Subject: Real World Units

I just got Poser 5, Upgraded from P-4 and I'm interested in the Real World Units. I finally found that I am using feet for my units but don't know how to use it to see the sizes of my objects. for example can I know use this to see the height of my figures and set them to a specific height? That's what I'd like to do but I can not figure out how. Anyone have any ideas. Thanks,

P.S. An easy way to determine height is to use a "box" prop. Load a box and then change yTran for the box until the bottom of the box is the same height as the top of the head on your figure. Now, you can read the figure's height from the yTran dial of the box. cheers, (again) dr geep ;=]

A problem I have found with using "Real World Units" in Poser 5 is that if I switch from one unit type type to another (e.g. from inches to cm and back to inches) the scale reduces to 93% of whatever it was previously.

units: inches
main camera position: ztran = 20.645 (default)
ytran = 37.161 (default)
xtran = 100 (to demonstrate scale change)

Edit -> preferences
change display units to centimeters
close preferences dialog

Edit -> preferences
change display units back to inches
close preferences dialog

main camera position: ztran = 19.200
ytran = 34.560
xtran = 93.001

The only units that seem to unaffected by this are the Poser Native Units. As a result I usually use PNU's.

That is because the standard Poser Unit is equal to 8 feet (96 inches) and not 100 inches. You will never get centimeters and inches to agree with Poser Units in P5 unless you use the real standard which is one PU = 8 feet (96 inches). Then your inches measurement will agree with your centimeters and PUs. And you will note that translating a box by 1 PU will move it exactly 8 feet or 96 inches. It is convenient to use 100 inches as a close approximation but it is not a precise equivalent of the standard Poser Unit. This has been verified by Curious Labs and DAZ and numerous independent 3rd parties. It is not a theory, it is fact.

P.S. Let me add that Geep's system is sometimes very convenient and I use it frequently for estimating small distances. When large distances are involved, I use 8 feet as the equivalent of one PU and I find that easier than trying to figure out how many inches there might be in 32 feet :-) For precision modeling, I always use the 96" standard to achieve the greatest precision.

The point that I was trying to make is that Poser gives different results at startup and after changing display units. The conversions are not consistent if you change display units during a session. It is safer to set the "display units" to PNU's and do the conversions yourself. Jeff

Yes, jeff - there is a known bug. Here is the fix: Always close Poser (and thereby open it) with Display Units set to Poser native units. Then when you switch, the results will be consistent and correct. If you launch to a "Preferred State" then be sure to set that to display "Poser native units" at startup. The problem arises when launching Poser to a standard other than native units.

Thanks, Geep! There is indeed a good use for both systems, and I would be lost without them both. In many Poser situations scale is not that critical so whatever system is faster for me is the one I would use. To get the most out of Poser, it is good to understand them both.

I just leave it in PNU mode since I'm normally too lazy to switch back and forth. I use 1:100 when I put anything together and reduce the scale to 96% if it has to match something in that scale. Works for me. Thanks, Jeff

Thank you Ron ... Your point about changing back to PNU before exiting Poser is a very good one and I'm glad you posted it. I don't know if it's worth doing a pictorial ... (i.e., a dr geep's junk type thingy) ... for it but I'm sure that more than one person has been "burned" by this fact. Obviously, there are times when the "scale" could be a critical factor, and other times when it would be irrelevant. ;=] Oh well, it keeps life interesting, eh? cheers, dr geep ;=]
