Subject: LW5 objects to VUE Pro

cinevid ( ) posted Tue, 27 July 2004 at 9:36 AM ยท edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 6:02 AM

Any thoughts on what to keep in mind when importing LW5 objects into VUE Pro. I'm not seeing many of my textures show up on the object. Color is correct but procedurals don't show up at all and texture maps are pretty hap-hazard.
Now I am using LW 7.5 but saving in Modeler as a version 5 object. Thanks for any ideas.

Ok, i don't have lightwave. But quite some experience with other 3D programs and im-/export of objects with materials. Because of differnet features you will always run in some problems - some heavier ones and some not so heavy ones. Most important is to use materials for export (and import into Vue or other programs) that only use features that the target application can deal with. Procedurals especially can be tricky because each program has its own way to calculate those. So you have a really good chance to loose. because of different methods. I think you learn it right now. I tried that with Bryce and Vue for axample. With some materials (mostly simple texture maps) i was lucky, others didn't worked at all. I only got very rough mappings where originally were procedural materials.

One day your ship comes in - but you're at the airport.

Thanks. That's what I expected. The manual says that only "some" procedurals will transfer. Anybody know what those might be? So far I got "squat" to transfer.

cinevid, its probably fair to say that no "procedurals" or shaders ever transfer from one 3d program to another. The first thing that has to happen is that the file format must carry color, and other "shader" information. The 3ds file format carries what may be the most information - but it is limited to ambient color, specular color, diffuse color, emissive color, specularity as a percentage value and opacity as a percentage value. Other programs carry the information that pertains to their own shader routines, but these typically are propriatary and either cannot or are not read by the various 3d programs. That is, or secondly, the target or receiving program must be written to read and use the information in the model file header. Vue and Poser (any version) definitely do not bother to read most of even the 3ds file format info when importing those file types. (Basically, they just read the emmisive and sometimes the specular color.) In general, 3D programs that have their own shader functions/processes do not bother to read the information contained in the model file header.

Thanks! Great info. Sad but great.
