Subject: Measuring memory?

I've just bought a Mac G4 with dual processors, running System 9. As Photoshop 5.0 opens on this system, the message "measuring memory" is presented as the plug-ins load. When this message appears, the cursor icon becomes corrupt and the program freezes. Is Version 5.0 incompatible with System 9, or with G4 dual processors? I'm prepared to upgrade my Photoshop, but I'd like to know first if the new system is the cause of the 5.0 problems. BTW...I have 100 megs of RAM alotted to Photoshop, so memory per se shouldn't be the source of the trouble. It may also be pertinent that this problem occurs only about half the time.

Wish I could help you on that one but I know nothing...AND I MEAN NOTHING about Macs. (sorry bout that...a little Y2J relapse from WWF last night:O) Hopefully some of the Mac users can help you with your problem. GeorgeD

The school here has 17- G4s running Photoshop 5, no problems, not with dual procesors though. How much memory do you actually have (more than 128, Mb, I hope!)? The system needs about 30-40 Mb these days. I suggest turning vertual memory on, set it to 1 1/2 time your RAM size. Quark has all kinds of System 9 problems, I haven't heard of any Photoshop ones. I've never seen a "measuring memory" message.

I have 512 megs of RAM. That ought to do 'er! I suspect that the dual processors are the problem, but I'll continue to investigate. The "measuring memory" message isn't in an error window...it's in the small print that flashes by as the program opens. But I've never seen it under normal circumstances.

I have a G3 233MHZ/w 160real/240 virtual ram. When PS 5.5 loads the "measuring memory" scrolls by, but very fast.Do you have your scratch disks for PS set-up in your prefs?

I thought the scratch disk was set automatically. I'll check and see if this is the source of the trouble. Thanks.

Disable the multiple processor function? How do you enable it to begin with? Ah, well! I'll check it out. Thanks!
