Subject: How many nodes for a Rainbow?

The star field is 6 nodes, and inside a big ball. (I am still working on a good star field) The rainbow is on a one sided square. No images were used for the texture, just some simple math. The real question is whether a dynamic rainbow is practical, or useful, and if the number of nodes matters? What you like, I will share.

Who cares if it's practical? The main thing is the "wow cool" factor, and this rainbow has it! I'd love it as an example what yo can accomplish with the nodes! And also as a nice toonish rainbow!

any chance of seeing the node setup for this? oh & I'll add a "wow cool" comment to this too ;)

Thanks for the WCs Key: The selected stuff on the right is a circle equation, the animated node values are the center. (The rainbow can work without this (replace with just u or v) but I recommend the arc ;) Node 14 determines the width (2/v1) and diameter (v2/v1) of the rainbow. If lighting is a problem increase the ambient value as desired. How: I added 2 isolated lines (14, 36) for the colors, and then used a slope adjustment, (20, 35) for the transparency. (That sound simple enough?) Other uses: With a couple more lines and a few adjustments the transparency could be used in a blender node to add a dynamic rainbow to any texture. I probably did this the long way, so any suggestions or corrections are welcome.

O.Wow once more. Being an absolute IMBECIL at math I can only marvel as other people do magic with the P5 nodes. Can anyone explain briefly (as to a 5 year old) what the CLAMP does?

I'd add a wow cool myself ! BTW : does anybody know where we can get a full description of what each function does (clamp for instance) ?

ynsaen ( ) posted Tue, 10 August 2004 at 12:49 PM

Define full description. The clamp function is actually defined the same way in my textbooks as it is in the manual!

OK full description as "with examples" Stuff like "Clamp: Selecting Clamp returns Value 1 unless Value 1 is less than 0 or greater than 1. If Value 1<0, 0 is returned. If Value 1>1, 1 is returned. Value 2 is ignored." is more than greek to me. At least I can read SIMPLE words in greek (like METAXA L)

I read in another thread that OMG! and Stunning! have gone missing, so I'll just say that this is the most opulent display of mathematics that I have ever seen. Congratulations on a most creative shader!

hahahaha. Ronstuff, you're killin' me here. I for one bow down to my P5 Shader Overlord.

ok -- full examples are forthcoming at RDNA -- I'm in the middle of a bunch of stuff with the math nodes (math is a lot more complicated than it seems at first, go figure) right now that I hope to have posted soon, as well as a new primer on the cloth room, and a bit more on the hair room. I've alredy covered a bunch of the nodes in my series -- and a couple of the posters to this thread help to keep me on my toes :) By the time Christmas rolls around this year, though, the Poser 5 forum at RDNA wil have covered All of the nodes int he material room, all the features of the cloth room, and all the elements in the hair room in detail.

Sorry I took so long. Displacement had the answer to the clamp questions. (I hope) Unless you are talking about the last color math clamp, and that was for the super green, when I was trying to overlap the colors, instead of meeting the lines directly, as this does. Thanks for the positive feedback, now I will have to take, or calculate the measurements of a real one, and polish this some more.
