Subject: Removing the face room?

KarenJ ( ) posted Thu, 12 August 2004 at 12:40 AM · edited Mon, 06 January 2025 at 1:13 PM

Hi all, Is there a way of removing the face room from start-up, in the same way one can remove Content Parasite? Removing CP makes it boot so much more quickly, I was wondering if getting rid of Face Room would help even more, if it's possible. Has anyone ever tried it? I'm reluctant to start messing about without knowing if it will cause Poser to die. Thought about making a backup copy of the UI and just fiddling, but if someone's got experience in trying it, I'd love to hear it...

I've not only tried it, I've succeeded. The downside is that it does not spped up the operation of Poser, and it actually breaks things. Plus, you have this annoying gap in between the tabs at the top of the screen. What it breaks is the general functionality of morph putty (which is usable on any character), and apparently drags Poser down to a crawl as the removal of it involves reomivng all the UI references -- and they appear to be hard coded. In general, the tabs that can be removed without wrecking the whole damn thing appear to be the Material Room, CP, and the Hair room. Again, however, you end up with slower performance, annoying gaps (where the interface elements are present now, they are simply missing -- but nothing fills in), and god forbid you should actually accidentally click on one of the areas removed -- Poser has a heart attack and shuts down entirely. This isn't s bad in XP/2K, but in a 9X system.... shudder...

Well, I just tried it. And it didn't work for me. In fact, it kind of broke stuff. Poser opened. A dialog popped up asking me to save/close/cancel. And somehow the properties window listed, for no figure whatsoever, "left forearm." However, removing CP was fine and clicking where the tab used to be doesn't seem to do anything to Poser for me.

oh -- this is true -- my apologies -- the CP does not appear to stay live. Face, Hair, Material, and Cloth all do. (Edit: err, no, that's wrong. Apparently Face and Hair do, but cloth is doing nothing, and neither is material. hmmm.. I may have missed a widget line...) The left forearm thing is the "crash" alerter, actually -- it's meant to indicate that something is wrong.

The only one I've ever had success removing is Content Parasite which did make a huge difference to the loading times.

Can Content Parasite be removed after the fact - i.e in an exsiting installation?? Or would I need to remove Poser and start again - removing it before first use?

You can remove CP at any time.

Kiera - thanks for that - I will have a go at it as everyone seems to be raving about how much faster Poser is without it ;-)I was afraid of "breaking it".

Removing Content Parasite helps Poser load time because a) it saves loading lots of Microsoft's large Internet Explorer code to do the internet functions, and b) Poser and said IE code aren't wasting any cycles communciating with each other (inter process) and/or banging on your firewall.

Any other room would at most only make a savings in the initial load time, and as it's likely small (relative to IE) and a contiguous interwoven part of the Poser application code, the load time savings are going to be small - if realised at all.

So I think we're out of luck - or conversely, very lucky that axing CP was soooo easy ;-)

How do I remove Content Paradise after the fact?

Re removing CP: Info exists here, but it's easiest to find at PoserPros, under Jaager's Poser 5 Tips & Tricks forum, 'cos he keeps it near the top of the forum.

Thanks folks, I will soldier on with the face room. I do use the morph putty tool from time to time so wouldn't want to break that :)
