Subject: "Convert images to .BUM?" What-huh?!

VermifugeTheRed ( ) posted Tue, 24 August 2004 at 12:18 PM · edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 8:54 PM

I've been pixelling for 8 years, but I'm a week new to this delicious 3d thing...so please don't think I'm an idiot~! ;)

Alrighty, I downloaded mounds of stuff, like J.Sliva's Rotunda, and the read me's keep saying I need to convert certain .jpg files to .bum or Poser will holler at me. I've checked everything I own that opens a graphic (PSP, Irfanview, et al) and NOTHING has .bum in it. :( What do I do?

If you have Poser 4 or Poser Pro Pack, Poser can do it for you. DAZ has step-by-step directions for how to have Poser do it If you have Poser 5, you have to use a different method for conversion. There are two Photoshop actions that I know of (one works in PS5+ and the other works in PS6+). I have both in the downloads area of my digital art site. bonni

Aha. I knew it would cause trouble to put the "how to convert bump maps" language in all downloads. Anyhow, this is a Poser4 issue. Although Poser5 is willing and eager to use jpegs for bump maps, Poser4 requires they be in an idiosyncratic variation of the .BUM format. Fortunately, Poser4 is also able to convert to this format. Since the BUM format is large and inefficient most people distribute their bumps maps in jpeg and ask the user to convert. With me so far? Only Poser4 can use them, and only Poser4 can make them. The way I recommend is to open an empty workspace in Poser, select the Ground prop, go into the Materials window and select "open" at the lower left, where the bump map is. From the "open" menu navigate to the appropriate textures folder in your Runtime directory. Most people will put "BUM" or "bump" in the name of the bump maps. Find every one of those and try to open them. Poser will squawk, and pop open this little window about "this must be converted to BUM format. Do it now?" And of course, you do it. Do them all, close Poser, you are ready to go.

Awesome, thanks for the help! :D You wouldn't by any chance know how to change a Mil Dragon to (any-other-darn-color), would you...? ;) ----Bonnie

You have Paint Shop Pro? Load the textures (the MilDragon uses a lot of them) into PSP and start playing around with the Hue function (Shift-H). Make certain you save the results under new filenames, unless you really want to overwrite the originals.

By default, the DAZ installer places the textures in Poser's RuntimeTexturesDAZAnimalsMilDragon folder. You'll want to tamper with the JPEGs ending in the letter "M" (the ones ending in "B" are bump maps).

After that, it's merely a tedious matter of reassigning all the textures to the figure. Or, if you have Poser 5, you could use the original textures and play around with Color_Math nodes in the Material Room.

I want some red ones. ;) Alrighty, thanks for the info. The thought of reassigning things terrifies me at this early stage, so I'll have a go at the Material room. I fiddled with this once...I clicked every part and altered the color for it--is this the way it must be done, or is there some sort of "one (or 2 or 3) click method"? I probably don't know enough about the program yet to be messing with this sort of stuff, but what the heck, I learn most things bass-ackwards. wink ----Bonnie

You'll have to do it manually for each material, I'm afraid.

You could buy the Millennium Dragon Textures accessory at DAZ; it includes a red texture (among others), and also MAT poses which will apply each texture set instantly. But the textures are basically identical other than the colour shift.

Or, you could visit Lyrra's Cyclops Studio. She has twelve free texture sets for the MilDragon, including MATs.

To say the truth, it is always easy for me. My Poser says "There is no bum-file;search again?" And I vote "No, break up" - my programm asks me again, and I vote "No, break up" and than Ill have it on my figure. Dont ask me why,but it works ;-) Sivana
