Subject: How would make a rope?

bandolin ( ) posted Wed, 25 August 2004 at 8:34 AM · edited Mon, 29 July 2024 at 5:22 AM

Anyone have an idea on how to make a rope? You know, those big, bulky hemp ropes used on 17th century ships. Sometimes they're taught, or coiled on the deck or hanging loosely from mast to spar. Just bought Bryce, having a blast! This is more fun than playing any computer game. Bandolin

Grab Smartpipe by madmax from this directory and get the zenith lighting system while you are there. Sorry but the links in freestuff no longer work and haven't been updated. Once you have smartpipe pose it and texture to look like a rope.

Thanks, tried importing smartpipe into Bryce 5 as an object, but says its an invalid format. I'm a real newbie. Maybe I did something wrong? Bandolin...

You need to place the obp file into the /presets/objects/user directory within the Bryce file structure. Then click on the triangle next to create to open the object window. At the bottom of the window there is the word installed, click and select User and you should see all the smartpipe variants in a smartpipe category.

Pff also, you could Multireplicate metaballs or spheres in a spiraling motion. Just take three metaballs at the top of your scene, set them up in a triangle, multireplicate them with a 10-20 degree turn, and move them down some. Then simply group the side metaballs.

lol@ornlu no, please, do dream up the hardest way :P drac

Jcleaver ( ) posted Wed, 25 August 2004 at 12:50 PM

I guess to be completely realistic, you could model each individual strand of the rope. Of course, it may take a while to place the strands correctly! Of course, you should texture each one individually as well.

Ornlu ( ) posted Wed, 25 August 2004 at 11:29 PM

HOw is that the hardest way? I thought he meant that he wanted the physical braid in the rope, which is only really doable by multireplicating a spiral.. In bryce anyway. You could always model it in another app that has deformers and apply a twist. One second.. now I have to defend myself... (heads off to bryce land)

There... rope. Is this what he meant? Because that's what I interpreted it as when I gave my responses. And that only took about... three minutes to make.

three minutes yeah. But you cheat, cause of the neural uplink to your render farm and all. Certainly the best way to make close up rope though. Render that at 3000x4000 and it'll still look like rope.

Ornlu ( ) posted Thu, 26 August 2004 at 2:42 AM

I only render stuff that'd take more than 6-8 hours on the farm though. Too much of a hassle otherwise.
