Render In Progress. I started the final render a few days ago. 20 hours later it was 12% done, not counting AA. Had to stop the render, I don't have that kind of patience. Why so long you ask. While building this scene I worked in solo mode a lot, and at 640x480. Never really rendered it all at once. Then there's the imported Vickie in the foreground, with her hi-rez texture, and the dress with it's several hi-rez textures. Course there's the big glass dome most of the scene is on the other side of. Oh, and each of those meteors has a spot light at its head, and is made of 50 or so metaballs (thanks electroglyph, I had been trying to get the effect with textures when all I needed was a light). I simply refuse to wait a week while this rendered. I only have the one computer... So I spent a few days wondering how to get this thing done. Thought about doing the meteors as 2D pics, should have thought of that sooner. When it came right down to it, I just didn't want to rebuild half the scene. Thought about setting up a network render at work. But I'm not sure how that works. Then it occurred to me. I'm rendering everything on the outside of the room now. When its done, I'll render everything inside the room along with a mask. 3 minutes of post work and ta-da, it'll be done. Sometime this weekend. I hope. I need to get started on the September challenge.

This moment deserves a cookie.

Yes, the city buildings are cheaply done, and yes, that is a canned texture (two really) on them. It works in the final because the closer ones are blocked by the dome. Yes, theres no light on the closest meteor. Ill fix that, somehow.

Feel free to peruse the previous posts if youre lost.

WIP almost done
The WIP without the nudity tag, updated
a different WIP really messed this one up.

Anyone have anything else I need to fix at the last minute?

nothing, really. great work :)

I think I broke it. The task bar still says 22% and I can't pull bryce up. If I minimize this window the computer just looks at me like, what? Task manager says Bryce is non-responsive, but its chowing down 96%-98% of my system resources. I'll figure it out when I'm done online.

Moongoat, oatmeal with white macadamia nuts please.

Thanks Drac. The dress still has that texture. Its regal, and looks alot better after AA. ------------------------------------------------------- may be asking where the temp file thats really the unsaved picture is, tomorrow.

If you want to test render a meteor or something else, why don't you just render that little area?

draculaz ( ) posted Thu, 26 August 2004 at 12:36 AM

yeah, leave bryce until it's finished. just ignore it for another 2 hours or whatever it's going to take to finish that render. it will go back to normal drac

Are you 'rendering to disk'? Doesn't that allow you stop and start a render? Something else I'm never sure about, and can't find in the manual, is.......can you use other programs while a scene is rendering? It doesn't seem to kill the render off completely, it just kinda slows while you're in the other program. But it seems a bit risky to do it with a very big render running. I'd like to know for sure that it's safe.

As an aside, while searching in vain for that info I hit on an interesting thing about the camera - probably DUH! stuff to everyone else - that you can drag out an origin handle just like with any other object, so you can do a orbit, say, in an animation.

When you're using other programs and have bryce in the bg it sets itself to low priority or idle I forget which. But it's basically really annoying.. and can't be set to normal or high priority.. I don't think this happens when rendering to disk, but I could be wrong.

You can't stop and start a render to disk. You can use other programs while you are rendering but as you said it does slow some of them down
