THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: watermarks

draculaz ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 1:30 PM · edited Sat, 25 January 2025 at 7:25 AM

for the love of god PLEASE keep them tasteful. nothing annoys me more than seeing a work done by someone where the details are obstructed by a huge repetative watermark. if you're that scared someone will steal your work, get one of those free yearly digimaric id's and put them on the work. don't spam your website on it like there's no tomorrow. geeze. drac

striving ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 1:33 PM

ROFL!!! I know of one that does that here. It is a bit over the top.. HAAHAA...

draculaz ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 1:46 PM

whistles innocently btw, that's digimarc, not digimaric

sackrat ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 2:04 PM

Geez,..............if someone wants to steal or use one of my crappy images I'd be flattered beyond belief. For me it's the signatures that take up a quater of the image that is annoying.

I will not look at this person pics nor ever visit the "spammed" website...it's damn annoying & completely distracts from the pic itself.

Yoro ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 2:17 PM

Think I know of whom you're talking of - and agree completely! It's a great pity how many details are not to see with an oversized logo and it destroys the whole atmosphere.

electroglyph ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 3:47 PM

It's a shame too, The work is great but the watermark distroys it. I click on it and think, "what's that, if only I could see the details." I can barely get through the galleries as it is. Since I'm going to be left wondering in the end or disappointed I no longer even click once I recognise the thumb. It just leaves me more time to look at Rochr or orbital's new work or the hundreds of others who will share.

danamo ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 3:51 PM

I do have to agree with all that's been said previously in this post, including Tom's! @Tom- hell, if your images are "crappy", then mine are worm-food brother!

Rochr ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 4:40 PM

I actually did put some huge watermarks on my images for a while. But that was to prevent that #%*@#~% who made a habit of ripping my stuff for the use of cd covers. I changed it back eventually, but i still think i have some tagged stuff left in the gallery though. Havent gone through every image yet. I can assure you, that having your images stolen, is anything but flattering. I know i would gladely have used that punks head for soccer practice.

y'know..if the CD's sold, seems like someone would owe you royalties..;) yeah, I know someone who has a call-sign handle ('nuff said) who does this..but that's his thang..

Yoro ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 4:54 PM

@Rochr Yeah this is true - so you have to decide if you want a spoiled or a stolen picture. I've had the same nice experience with some of my pics, my logo was removed and they were used as a background for Poser-images (and above all really ugly ones). I wouldn't have even noticed it if somebody hadn't told me. After a 'polite' mail to that ass and my threat, he would have to discuss this subject with my lawyer (which I don't have ggg) the next time, it hasn't happened again.

striving ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 4:58 PM

I have had some of my 2d work stolen and SOLD on ebay (my NHL wallapers). Even so, I cant see pasting crap all over my images as to ruin them. On my 2d work now, I do put my logo mark hidden as best I can somewhere in the pic. Kind of like the PLayboy bunny on the covers. This is the risk we all take. But to go over board.. well, thats his call.

electroglyph ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 5:16 PM

I'd rather not chase off the good guys while I'm fighting off the bad guys. If some one sees my work and decides to hire me they can protect the work with a copyright and lawyers. The only thing I make real money on is buildings and site plans. If someone wants to steal a render of a gas station or summer camp they're welcome. All thieves seem to want to steal are naked Vicki's.

Rochr ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 5:33 PM

Unfortunatly the bad guys ruins it for the good guys. I get a bunch of emails every week from people asking for desktop images, and unless its someone i know and trust, i cant send them what they want. If its one thing ive learned from all that crap that happened, is to NEVER post/send higher res images. I personally think it sucks, but the dishonest few have forced me to take some precautions.

The crazy thing is on my NHL pics being printed and sold.. they were all 72 DPI.. they must have looked like crap.. But I guess some people dont care.

MoonGoat ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 6:32 PM

If someone is willing to put forth the effort to steal my art, I find it quite flattering. I have never put my name and/or email on any of my images since joing renderosity. So if you would like to steal my art and use it to impress your girlfriend, your welcome. Just make sure to leave comments and sign my guestbook. You haven't "made it big" until your work has been stolen and used to sell someone elses product. ;o) I dream of the day someone violates my copyrights. sigh... The thought of angerly wanting to sue someone in an inaccessable foreign land because their using my robot renders to help sell their lame techno cd's...ah....(brings a hopeful tear to my eye) Maybe one day. I was thinking more of seeing my "Duck Run Dream" printed on alternating sheets of toilet paper. Long live techno.

Roflmao, yes! To be able to wipe my butt with my own renders. Do I dare dream the impossible?

But, seriously. Such a post can be a formula for upset members, start mentioning names, and its all gonna blow up. Nobody likes to be "talked about". :o/ So, that's why I just deleted your post, mark. Thanks for understanding. AgentSmith

I'm guessing the person in question must have had a very bad experience, and isn't willing to have it repeated. When it gets right down to it, there's nothing you can do if someone rips off your stuff. Unless you're really willing to spend huge money on lawyers and courtcases. I've been in the position three times now, and as a result I don't even like photographs of my 'real life' 3d work appearing in magazines, because assholes immediately copy the ideas. I've walked into a pub and found casts from my work ranged around the whole of the main bar :o( Pub manager said "not my problem, I paid a company to do it". Architect said "not my problem, I bought them from a workshop". Workshop guy said "I don't care, f**ck off".
