This worked out so well I had to repost this to share with everyone. Its so elegant and simple, and demonstrated to me that I just don't understand how the texture editor works despite hours of trying. I've been attempting to create a realistic rope with a small polygon count for a 17th C sailing ship I'm creating. I've got lots of rope to make. I've many suggestions, all of them good, but ICM had the greatest so here it is. Here's the bump and texture...

You could also use this with modeled rigging made in another app. I will try it on my Chinese Junk where the rigging was done in Rhino.

Oh...I thought your problem was how to make the "ropes" look curved and such, okay. ;o) AS

calulating a catenary in with the already computer intensive spiral bandolin previously described would be a trick . . . makes my brain hurt just thinking about it . . . but I suppose it's possible; I think understanding how the posable tube thing (I forget the name of it sorry) was built would help. It's fairly simple to understand once you have a look at it and a custom build of that using the 10 degree three strand spiral might work, but one would have to work with it a while to get it anywhere near right I imagine . . . and the rendertimes! groan.
