internet connection sharing as it were. i have 2 comps here, one is a laptop and my main work computer. i've just managed to get ICS to work, but obviously most of my ports are capped by the other comp. i've tried freeing them by going into the server's internet connection and trying to define them, but it doesn't seem to be working. like for instance 113 for mirc's identd (113 internal, 113 external, and my laptop's ip). any help would be highly appreciated. drac (yes, i'll have your babies)

tried to edit my post and it said my time was up to do that hmmmmm.....Hope Im understanding what you up to not sure but heres what i did. I've Been useing a hub (though you can use a switch hubs less expensive aprox $15 and up depending on number of ports) connecting 2 comps to the net. But with out knowing more about your connection (56k/broadband/ ect) and networking skills. I am a bit limited in what I can sugjest sittin on this side of the screen. But with my hub all I had to do was add it in (so my computer would recognize it, same way for your nic card) after getting it connected to the comps and to the net, I was up an running. (diffrence between a hub and a switch boils down to switches require power hubs dont it gets kinda deep from there on what some of there differing functionality is and why) Hope this helped :)

It's easier to run the computers through a router than it is to try daisy chaining them. You should be able to get a decent router for around $100, even with wireless connectivity to boot. But then again, that's just me talking.

I've got a Cisco wireless for about $70..works...well, ok..but I live in a plastered house (the house, not the inhabitants..;) that is held in place with wire mesh..which functions as a Faraday cage (like a roach motel for radio signals..;) que lastima..They work well as long as noone's using the wireless phones, and the neighbor isn't using his CB..;)

We have 4 machines sharing an internet connection via ICS (going throug a hub). There are 2 W2K clients and 1 XP client using a broadband connection on a W2K ICS server. Don't know if this is anything like your setup, but we have had very little trouble with it EXCEPT when we have to update the firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro in our case): this seems a very common cause of grief with ICS. If you can access the internet from your server (the one with the broadband connection) but not at all from your client(s), check your firewall to ensure it is not preventing outgoing connections to any of your ISP's servers (DNS servers in particular). You can use reverse IP lookup to identify IP addresses it's blocking, if it doesn't give you that info. Some ISPs can also alter something in your TCP setup called an MTU setting, which can make it difficult for you to browse certain sites. If your client(s) can see some sites but not others, it could be this. There are some fixes around on the internet for this, but they involve updating the registry. Also, if you happen to use VPN, this will shut off your client's ICS access.
