Subject: OT: New movie coming out...

There's a new movie coming out, something to the effect of "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" I only mention it, because watching the previews, the movie looks like one incredibly animated Rochr scene. Yeah...i know, totally random.

looks like a weird adaptation of that microsoft flight sim game... forgot what it's called, with all the weird planes and so on. definetely cool though :D

I believe the XBox game is "Crimson Skies". It's development was highlighted in a special about game development lasr year.

It looks like hollywood's takeing another swing at the whole live-action meets japanese anime' genre. The setting looks like it was ripped from the series TechTV always seems to be playing on Anime Unleashed. And the washed out colors give it that animated feel.

pauljs75 ( ) posted Sat, 11 September 2004 at 10:31 PM

A hybrid of Crimson Skies and Last Exile? Hmmm...

Actually it's trying to capture the flavor of early serials and films from the 40's like Captain Midnight, or The Phantom Empire. The film appears to have been most heavily influenced by Max Fleischer's animated adventures of Superman from the 40's. In fact the giant robots are uncannily similar to one's created by Fleischer in Superman vs The Mechanical Monsters.

pogmahone ( ) posted Sun, 12 September 2004 at 2:03 AM

tee hee - so they can call it an homage, rather than a rip-off

Zhann ( ) posted Sun, 12 September 2004 at 3:00 AM

Definitely has the flavor and 'cinema artist' look of the Serials, looking forward to owning it on DVD.

Yay! A two-fisted flying pulp adventure straight from the middle of the 20th century!!! And with Jude Law too (one of my favourite us actors) !

Lucifer_The_Dark ( ) posted Sun, 12 September 2004 at 5:54 AM

I'll probably spend the entire film drooling over the cgi & miss the story completely

"Jude Law...(one of my favourite us actors)" wha'??? US???? :o|

RodsArt ( ) posted Sun, 12 September 2004 at 6:23 AM

It's definately a "keeper" movie. Will have to watch it at least a dozen times at first to check out (drool);) & inspect the CG.

Im not so sure about this one....if only from what I know about it. I think I saw a preview for it in a theater about a year and half ago(!), and noticed it had the Stargate SG-1 theme playing throughout. Anyway, I heard nothing about for a long time, and figured they canned the movie, or it got in some legal trouble with Stargate (Hm, I was just watching TV, and a commercial came on for a preview about some 3-D animation movie or something about a train and some kids, I dont know what it was about...but THAT had Stargate music in it too...now Im starting to wonder...) Anyway, Sky Captain finally seems to be coming out, and in the 'new' preview(which is a much shortened old one), they replaced the music with some weird kind of techno stuff. Don't really like it much, but ah well. Hopefully the movie is somewhat interesting...

Sparr, The other one you saw was "The Polar Express". An animated film based on the hugely popular children's book of the same name. It stars Tom Hanks (one of my personal faves) in, if I remember correctly, six different roles. Looks kinda' nice. Re: "Sky Captain". I don't know. The thing was shot almost entirely on bluescreen. It's got that old film noir look to it, which is kind of nice. But me, I don't like old films. Just can't get into 'em. And this really has that '40's feel to it. Think I may just wait for the DVD. :-) The one I'm most looking forward to is "The Incredibles" from Pixar. Looks really good, and Pixar hasn't made a bad film yet. And it's directed by the same guy that did "Iron Giant", which I liked. Just can't wait 'till it comes out!

i read an article last week about this flick. it said there was footage of laurence olivier in it... ripped stock. also the whole thing was pretty much done in front of a blue screen (as if nobody could tell lol)... also it noted, the cg folks worked in black and white ()cant exactly remeber the whole article, i think it was in the ny post or times), then, presumably, colorized later. lotsa post in this movie. probably why it was a year or more between teaser and release. ill definately go check it out.

they had something on pay cable (one of those 'the making of'..;) about a half-hours' worth of factoids, behind-the-scenes..etc., kinda reminds me of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in a way..was wondering when someone was gonna notice it..;) Looks very retro, and fairly fun..

Early trailers often use music from other sources, as the official score hasn't been composed at that time.

Mrdodobird ( ) posted Sun, 12 September 2004 at 6:39 PM

Yeah. That's what amazed me. It's a whole movie with no actual sets, just greenscreen. Whoa. Kinda boggles the mind. I mean, I know they've made whole cg MOVIES before, but this one has a slight attemp at realism. (They also wanna keep it kinda fakey, which I think it totally awesome). As far as the music thing goes, yeah, that always catches me off guard, but they do it a lot. Generally they release the trailers before the movie's been finished, and since they generally do the music as one of the last things (since the music usually relies heavily on the editing) they just get permission to use music from a different movie. I believe "Alamo" (or whatever it was called) had a trailer which featured the gladiator music. BIZarre.

maxxxmodelz ( ) posted Sun, 12 September 2004 at 10:02 PM

It reminds me of TRON for some reason. Real actors against a totally CG background.

Tools :  3dsmax 2015, Daz Studio 4.6, PoserPro 2012, Blender v2.74

System: Pentium QuadCore i7, under Win 8, GeForce GTX 780 / 2GB GPU.

rj001 ( ) posted Mon, 13 September 2004 at 6:48 AM

yes Sky CAptain has been touted for some time, but distribution dates held it up. Tron was actually not all CGI and a larger percentage than expected was hand drawn because of time limitations.

Experience is no substitute for blind faith.

I found out that someone I know actually worked on the movie (doing computer animation of an office scene..;) said they used Maya and another program..I'll have to look for him in the credits..

Yup, movie was done with nothing but actors and blue/green screens. The actors took like 5 weeks to do their part, the CGI part took a couple years. Pretty much Maya for everything in the film. Rendered out on a 200 computer farm running Linux and Renderman tools. I think it will do BIG business. Angelina Jolie has already publically voiced wanting to do a prequel to the movie (about her character, of course) AgentSmith
