THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Voting in the hot 20 - a technical problem

Yoro ( ) posted Thu, 30 September 2004 at 8:29 AM · edited Mon, 27 January 2025 at 10:52 AM

Normally if you open a pic in the hot 20, you have to submit a comment and than the vote-icon appears. Since some weeks I got no more voting icon after placing a comment, I have to go back to the 'normal' gallery and leave my vote there. Have I just missed an innovation or got my pc her monthly PMS? Thanks for any enlightenment!

I was under the impression that you always had to go thru the normal route to the gallery in order to vote. Interesting that you used to be able to comment then get the vote option.

Yoro - You're right. The vote thing doesn't show up anymore.

Ang - it used to work that if you commented on a hot 20 pic (that you got to from the hot 20 list) then after the comment had registered, the vote button would be there too.

Yes I noticed the same problem, starting a couple of days back.

there's been times i've voted without really leaving a comment...

draculaz ( ) posted Thu, 30 September 2004 at 9:47 AM

oh wait, this is what you mean: "The Hot 20 is based on the number of votes by members an image has gotten in the previous 7 days. The button for voting is below the full size image after you click on the thumbnail. Thus, one member can only generate one view during the 7 day period. The main gallery does not track unique viewings, so it's count will always be higher. These ranking are updated in real time. Surfers that are not logged in can not vote. The vote button is not shown when you browse through the Hot 20." so if the hot20 button isn't showing, it means that it's already in the hot20. or rather that you got to it through the hot20 instead of the gallery. drac

When I first joined r'osity the vote didn't appear unless you'd been through the main gallery then it changed so that it appeared if you'd left comments, now it's gone again :(. Please can we have it back :)

glad to see that at least it's not only my problem ggg. @Drac: hmmm ... that's not really an explanation, why has it worked before and now doesn't longer anymore? Something must have been changed - and it would be VERY kind if we could get these option back! Find this kind of voting quite intricating.

draculaz ( ) posted Thu, 30 September 2004 at 12:29 PM

i don't understand what the problem is, honestly. the button isn't there when you click images in the hot20. if you click those same images in the artists' galleries, you can vote for them some more. drac

Yoro ( ) posted Thu, 30 September 2004 at 12:58 PM

right, the button isn't there if you only click an image in the hot 20. But as soon as you submitted a comment (also in the hot 20) and this comment has registrated, the vote-button has appeared. In the hot 20 list. And exactely this option, which used to work the way I just told has disappeared, now there's no vote-button in the hot 20 anymore, whatever you do. Now clear? ;-)

striving ( ) posted Thu, 30 September 2004 at 2:36 PM

I noticed this too about a week or so ago.
There is an easier way to get the VOTE button back without having to go back through the artist gallery or back to the Bryce gal.

When you open an image from the Hot 20 section, the URL in your browsers Address bar will look something like this:

http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=771704&Hot=Y&Sectionid=2

To get the VOTE button in your current window, just delete the part of the URL from &Hot... on (the text I underlined). Then just hit enter (or the GO button in IE). The page will reload and the Vote button will be there.

Anyway, thats how I do it. I am on dial up, so going back through the galleries takes me some time. This saves me all the trouble.

If there's been a change, I should think it's an attempt to make the "Hot 20" nonsense a bit more meaningful. When the "Hot 20" first started, you could instantly vote for an image whilst viewing it via the "Hot 20". This meant that simply being in the "Hot 20" meant an image was far more likely to get a vote than images in the regular gallery. This resulted in a feedback loop making it quite difficult for images outside the "Hot 20" to get in. You can thank yours truly, PJF, for the suggestion of getting rid of that (and Russell, the chap who used to program Renderosity, for doing the technical implementation). This new idea sounds like another attempt to further distance the act of viewing the "Hot 20" from the act of voting in it. Ideally, everyone should be looking at all the images in the gallery and making a choice of what's best from there. If that happened, the "Hot 20" might mean something. But it remains the fact that a lot of people just look at the "Hot 20" expecting to see the current best works, and then dig down to vote for what they think is good from that selection. It's still a self-perpetuating nonsense. I can't believe I just got involved in a "Hot 20" discussion. There go a few minutes of my life I'll never get back.

As far as I could tell it's like PJF said. You used to be able to get the vote button after leaving a comment cause the refresh link was to the gallery, not the Hot20 like striving said only automatic. or, The &Hot=Y tag is added to the link in from the Hot20, this tag turns off the vote button. When you comment the page reloads without the tag. Apparently, to prevent people from only viewing and voting within the Hot20, this 'glitch' has been fixed.

PJF-"If there's been a change, I should think it's an attempt to make the "Hot 20" nonsense a bit more meaningful." -You got it, that's why. "But it remains the fact that a lot of people just look at the "Hot 20" expecting to see the current best works, and then dig down to vote for what they think is good from that selection." -I agree. There are far too many great works out there, that don't make it into an area where there are only 20 spots. I would like to see a seperate "Most Viewed, Most Commented, Best Rankings, that would be resritcted to the last 15 days. Maybe it would stimulate members looking beyond just what's new, and the hot20. :o AS AgentSmith

Striving, I do not use the "Favorite Images" area on my artist page. I see you do. AND...I see your "Favorite Images" have THUMBNAILS! How do you do this? (I see no one elses page does it?) It's like having your own "hot20".....an idea I like. AS

Found the answer to thumbnails with your favorite images, AS check your PM's. Example at my Renderosity-homepage

AS, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Seems RobertJ has given you the answer. Its just using the IMG SRC tag when adding the fav. Unless someone else wants it, I will save all the typing to put it here. lol. -Bruce PS, about your "seperate "Most Viewed, Most Commented, Best Rankings, that would be resritcted to the last 15 days." I like that Idea too. Pull some strings and get it going! LOL.

PJF ( ) posted Fri, 01 October 2004 at 2:23 PM

The "most viewed" used to be the silliest feedback loop of all. Accessing and viewing images via the "most viewed" gallery resulted in those images becoming even more viewed compared to the rest. The most viewed Bryce Gallery image for years, and probably since near the beginning, was a half naked Poser woman standing in some water. I think that image would still be 'top' today if the crew hadn't changed the process for the better. Ugh, more time gone... ;-)
