Subject: Creating .mtl files

susanmoses ( ) posted Wed, 06 October 2004 at 10:40 PM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 5:25 AM

I want to import .obj files made in Poser 5 to Bryce 5. I know they need an accompanying .mtl file to preserve the materials while importing. How do I create a .mtl file? Also, some of the downloads from freestuff around the web come with a .mtl file... but not all... so I need to create .mtl files for these as well. I have downloaded a free software called MeTal Fix... which makes it possible for Bryce to read the .mtl file: http://www.fignations.com/jelisa/mtl/mtl_fixer.html and some tutorials on using it here: http://www.fignations.com/jelisa/mtl/mtl_tutorial1.html... but it only works if there is a .mtl file to Fix. Thank you for your responses -Susan

As far as I know, Poser always creates
a .MTL file automatically when you export
an OBJ.

This MTL may not have everything Bryce
wants but it's definitely always there.
So if you have an OBJ that didn't come with a MTL... get it into Poser, be sure the materials are right as seen in Poser, and export it.

That's been my experience too, ockham. I did have back in the P3-into-Bryce4 days some strange stuff with tex maps going 180 (easily fixed within Bryce, tho). One issue, though, is that transparency is not included in the mtl file Poser exports (or, at least, the one that Poser4 exports). This means you'll have to work up the transparencies yourself.

Trans isn't supported by Poser 5 either *Meaning, trans will not export from P5 to Bryce

Thanks Xantor... I'll look for it. Also, I am noticing my .mtl file with the .obj exports and the MeTaL Fixer has worked on a few... -Susan

The daz forums do have a search. I found the link to stewers poser 5 exporter. message number 5 at the link tells you what to do and has links to the files to download, it sounds quite complicated but it is really quite easy.

Okay xantor, I need your help on this one: The instructions by stew are:

Installation

  1. Run this python script from Poser.
  2. Download and run the PIL installer.
  3. Download my OBJ exporter script.

Usage

  1. Do whatever you do in Poser 5 to build your scene
  2. Run my script, enter the destination file name
  3. Wait until export's finished
  4. Open Bryce, if it's not running
  5. Import the obj file you created in step 2

I have done the following and need follow-up advice:

  1. I copied the Python script onto a Notepad document... but I don't know what he means by running it from Poser? Details please...

  2. I downloaded the PIL Installer... and clicked on it tu run it and it said I needed Python version 2.2 (which I just downloaded). I will try to run it again. Is there anything else I need to know here?

  3. I downloaded his OBJ exporter script (it came as a objex.py File).

Usage:

@ 2. What does he mean by "Run my script, enter the destination file name"?

Thank you for your help, Susan

Open poser, click on file, run python script. When the open file box comes up locate the register.py and click ok. Then run the PIL Installer. When you run his script it's the same as exporting an object from poser.

You can run the object importer script the same way as mrisis said click on file run python script. You don`t install python, poser 5 has python 2.2 built in and installing it again mucks everything up. If you installed python 2.2 then uninstall it. Run the first python script from Poser again. Run the PIL installer again. That should be it, run the python script objex.py to export the object.

Thanks xantor... I downloaded, but didn't install yet... and I noticed a Python 2.2.dll file in my Poser 5 folder... so this should help... I'll let you know if I have any problems... Thanks again, Susan
