Subject: Problems uploading images to gallery

emay68 ( ) posted Sun, 10 October 2004 at 1:55 AM · edited Thu, 30 January 2025 at 3:37 PM

Hi. I tried three times to upload a large image and thumbnail to the fractal gallery and had problems each time. The first two times, the thumbnail didn't load-just the empty box with red X in the corner-and the larger image looked awful-all pixelated. I deleted both times. For these two efforts I created my JPG files using Photoshop Elements 2.0. I read in another subject in the forum that Photoshop compresses JPGs too much so I converted to JPG using Infranview and tried to upload again. This time, after the upload page finished, I was taken to the main gallery page. I viewed the fractal page and there is no sign of either of my images. Anyone have any idea where they might have ended up? I don't even want them to post now, because I'm afraid the large image will still look awful and I won't catch it until later in the day after everyone has already seen it. Ugh. I appreciate any advice as this was my first attempt to put up an image in any of the galleries and I'm obviously upload challenged. Thanks. :-)

Off the bat, sounds like a internet problem. At what point your upload is being cut off I don't know (your provider, our server hiccupping, the www in general, etc.) IrfanView will do you good, that's one of the programs I use. At this point, I can only suggest trying again at another time, see if the www has ironed out. As of now, I see no thumbnails in your gallery. AgentSmith Mod

SndCastie and AgentSmith, Thanks for replying, I really appreciate it. :-) When I use "Save for Web" in PS Elements, do you know if I should have "optimized" checked or unchecked? What about "quality"? 60? 80? Higher? I know my files were under the limits of 15 and 512kb. Well, I will try again here in a little while. I'll keep trying. I'll get it right eventually. :-) Thanks again, Molly

I'm not familiar with PS Elements, but it sounds like its basing the jpg quality on a percentage scale (1%-100%). Usually anywhere in between 80%-90% is good. My pics usually average 250kb. Optimized might mean progressive, which either way it is probably fine to use. ;o) AS

I finally got my image uploaded! :-) I tried the PS Elements again, but had the same problem of bad pixelization so I deleted it. Tried the Irfanview again and it worked just fine. I don't have any idea why it didn't work yesterday, but that's ok. Whew. I'm all better now. :-) Thanks again for your help. Molly
