Subject: Procedural Terrains in Vue5

Ragtime ( ) posted Sun, 10 October 2004 at 6:58 AM ยท edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 5:03 PM

I'm still waiting for my copy of Vue5 to ship so I'm still trying to sort of guess what the new features do. Am I correct in thinking that the new procedural terrains will allow you to create terrains that you can stretch so that you don't have gaps in the landscape? You know what I mean? You sometimes create a great looking mountain but have to create loads of smaller terrains to fit around it to create a whole scene? Please forgive me if I'm not making much sense, I'm new to even Vue4 never mind Vue5 so I'm still trying to get my head around things!

That's exactly what it is. Procedural terrains allow you to create terrains as large as you want, without losing resolution in the foreground of the scene. Creating a particular terrain can be tricky at firts if you have something particular in mind, but once the learning curve passed, this is a feature you will have a hard time doing without.

What is exactly procedural terrain, I know procedural textures, it is similar?

agiel ( ) posted Sun, 10 October 2004 at 11:28 AM

yes... it is a terrain using a procedural texture to generate heights.

And what are the advantage over Mapped texture apart resolution independent.

Procedural terrains have an incredibly low polygon count.
