Max is a great program to use for modelling, I use max for most of all my model work.

Hi,

I'm wondering how much people are using 3dmax (smile). Here in Germany a licence for 3dmax is incredible expensive.

But, you are right, 3Dmax got so much features for creating meshes. In our compnay, I have got a version (3Dmax 6) on my PC for my work, so I can try it for my own meshes from time to time. There are more features available you need for Poser-meshes.

At home we got Carrara (started with Raydream5) and are satisfied.

Have a nice day

thank for for answering ,other thing, how can I format the model after I creat ,so it can be used as poser standard files ,(ex. artists sell their stuff here at renderosity, how they creat the file format for poser ? )

Getting Max just for modeling is overkill. If it's just for creating clothing, you may want to look at much cheaper programs like Amapi, Wings, ZBrush or the new Modo.

We know just one way:

  • export mesh-model as *.obj
  • import into Poser by 'File->Convert Hier File' because of conforming clothes
For this you must create a file (*.phi) Look at your Poser CD. I'm not sure, perhaps there is a *.phi included as example. So you can see the structure. Else, there are nice tools to create *.phi (think so).

Phi builder is available at the link, it was written for poser 3 but will work with poser 4 and poser 5 stuff.

Pro Pack and P5 also have the Setup Room, which provides a visual interface for rigging figures.

Personally, I've been using MilkShape ($25) to model clothing.

I use Max (version 3.1) for all my stuff. I use the Habaware plugin to export the file as an OBJ (Max doesn't do OBJ files without a plugin), Objaction Scaler to resize it (I work 1000X), and CR2 Editor to fit the mesh to a "borrowed" CR2. All of these are freeware, BTW. UV Mapper (freeware or Pro) and MT Mirror (freeware) are also very useful. Modifing the joint parameters is done directly in Poser, you will also need programs to work on your texture maps, like Photoshop. Normally, if it is conforming clothing you want to use the figure's CR2, or an existing CR2 from similar clothing for that figure, PHI files are really for starting-from-scratch figures. Conforming clothing has to match the figure it is conformed to.

I used max (3 and 5) @ work gmax at home for a number of years, but now am using trueSpace5.2, for clothing and everything else actually. Basically anything that can export a 3ds or obj file and can manipulate verts in 3d space ( as philC puts it) can model clothing for poser. I dont' bother with the phi method as the set up room works great for me.

I usually use the setup room, too. You have more control over how the parts work than with phi files.

Cinema4D with the Mocca module looks to be a more affordable option for making Poser clothes.
