Hi all, I'm looking for a free program to convert 3D models for use in Poser 5. I've seen models in PRJ , COB and other formats I'd like to use, but.... Any suggestions for a good program would be appreciated. I have Win XP Pro.

3DLinks lista a lot (free/shareware/commercial) 3d Object Converter: http://web.axelero.hu/karpo/ shareware If you look hard, you can probably still find a copy of the shareware version of '3D Exploration' - now Deep Exploration.

Thanks for the response. Crossroads is only for win 95 and hasn't been updated in years so that's no help. Checked out the 3d links... didn't find anything free except demos which I hate. They usually have the function you want disabled and they just take up valuable disc space. Thanks for the suggestions though. I'll keep looking.

PoseRay will read OBJ, LWO, 3DS, DXF, RAW, UDO and export OBJ so you can import into Poser.

Check the tutorial for importing into Poser in the PoseRay manual.

I use Windows 2000 and Crossroads seems to run fine for me. As mentioned, though, it never was the greatest converter around but it may work well for specific files. The Avalon collection listed at 3D Links has a lot of single format converters that are free though I don't know if there is one for cob (Truespace files). AFAIK, unregistered version of "3d Object Converter" is limited only by not supporting some relatively obscure formats. If you can find 3D Exploration, it has a nag screen. It's no longer being sold and whether you use it after the 30 days is up to you. There's an older version of Truespace available free (version 3 I think). Of course it won't read the newer version files but there are probably many files out there it will read. Sometimes you can use multiple steps. The Japanese freeware modeler Metasequoia LE will import cob and export dxf. I tried it with a cob file I have and it worked great. Poser wouldn't read the dxf though so I opened it in PoseRay and exported it as an obj which I was able to import into Poser. There's some faceting but I just did a quick export from PoseRay. You may be able to use subdivision or some export option to smooth those out or find another dxf to obj/3ds solution that Poser will read. Not the most convenient process but if you find a model you really want, worthwhile. Also, look at other free modelers which may have the import option you need and be able to export to something you can use.

You might also look at Accutrans--no limits on the demo and for $20.00, if it works, well worth buying.
